Some people will argue that because of the s at the end, that is just part of the reason.

The reason is that, as someone have already noted, when you say "The Philippines" you are referring to a group or not just one country, much like a whole group of islands. And nobody is implying anything when they do, they are just properly reffering to it.

And thus you also say "The Bahamas". "The United States of America", "The Aleutians" or "The Aleutian Islands" and many more examples all over the world. This is not just an only in the Philippines kind of thing.

I go for the answer of Annely, because of the "S" ending part on the word. Whether there is THE or NOT the Philippines will be the poorest/under develop country in Southeast Asia. So what is the difference with or without the word "the" there? Nothing I guess. So you are just wondering about this magnificent word huh? When there are lots of things that you can think of about the Philippines that will unravel the mystery "why the Philippines never progresses in spite of the fact that Filipinos are great in boxing/singing/dancing/ and beauty contest...etc the list is probably endless?" Filipinos are the No. 1 sort after EMPLOYEE around the globe. Yes, most employer like Filipinos as their base workers. It is like FILIPINO OR NOTHING, their battle cry. I know because I am an ofw. So do not wonder anymore about the word THE attach on the word PHILIPPINES. Whether the word THE or the S is remove in this word, the meaning is still the same thing. The former Philippines Island that once was colonized and made a territory under the US constitution.

Good question and one that can be answered easily.

Philippines on it's own is where?

Is it where Manila is--or where Leyte is, Or where Mindanao is?

No--Philippines in it's entirety is all those islands--yes?

So, ----Philippines---- the word on it's own, cannot describe the entire country as it is made up of around 7000 islands.

THE Philippines refers to 'THE' Philippines as a whole. Not just one place because it is not one place--it is thousands of places.

Example" Cebu is not ALL of 'The ' Philippines, it's only Cebu so you cannot say to a person that as they now be on Cebu Island, they are in Philippines--They are on Cebu Island--IN, the Philippines.

Otherwise it would only be called PHILIPPINE no ''s''

Yeah, yeah, long-winded explanation but there it is.

We're talking about a group of islands named after King Phillip the Second of Spain. Maybe it's unfair to name a country after the king of some other country, but that's what the name means. So they were called 'The Philippine Islands'. Or 'The Philippines' for short. 'The Philippines' means 'The islands of King Phillip'.

Many groups of islands are named this way. The Hawaiian Islands, The Aleutian Islands, The Azores, the Canaries, the Seychelles, etc.

Because the official name of the country is the Republic of the Philippines, hence the Philippines

  • 1 decade ago

    Because:

    1. The Philippines is an archipelago. It's made up of different islands all belonging to one group/country.

    2. It's a formal name

  • 1 decade ago

because THE Philippines is short for The Philippine Islands. it's plural and it needs an article to indicate reference being made to a group of Islands. for grammar's sake, take out the "s" and ask yourself "what's a Philippine?" it's an adjective, not a proper noun. that's why THE Philippines is grammatically correct.

if you add an article to a proper noun (like that school calling themselves "THE Ateneo"), it's implying a certain definition to that noun.

Because Philippines ends with an "S", it sounds plural. Like "the" United States. As opposed to France, people don't say "the" France.

Because there in only one Philippines in this world, hence The Philippines!

It just sounds better than "PHILIPPINE" or "THE PHILIPPINE"

Maybe also because of so many islands.

Just shorter than The Philippine Islands
