What are the pros and cons of both? Does it really make a difference?

I've had them both. FWD gets better gas mileage, less stuff to go wrong. Obviously the disadvantage is less traction. I also do not like the way FWD handles in the snow. AWD is loads better in the snow, the difference is night and day. The biggest issue I had with AWD is decrease in gas mileage. Usually with the same model of car the mileage drop is about 2-3 mpg over the same car with FWD.
