Can I use 7.62mm NATO in a .308 win rifle?

I've heard that they are different, and I've heard that they are the same, so I just need to know if I can use 7.62x51mm rounds in a Remington 700 chambered in a .308 win?

The cartridge is the same size. The differences are that the 7.62N has a thicker case wall and the chambers of the military rifles in most European countries are cut a few thousandths of an inch deeper. You will have no problem shooting military 7.62N rounds out of your .308 other than you may not get the performance that you are used to. I think that the NATO spec also limits the chamber pressure to substantially lower levels than commercial .308 ammunition.

Not a problem. The .308 has more punch than the 7.62 so will handle it. There's also a few thou difference in the headspace but nothing to worry about.

Sure, go ahead. Self-loaders can be picky about the diet you feed them but a 700 won't be so finicky, at least not until it gets downrange.

They are more or less the same. Modern guns chambered in either will handle both just fine.
