There are now no popular German male names starting with "H" in the top 30. There was "Heiko" in the 1960's, but it was considered "lower class".
You have to go back before WWII to find among the popular names Hans, Harry, Heinz, Hel(l)mut, Hel(l)muth, Herbert, Hermann and Horst. They fell out of favor after the war.

Names starting with H aren't exactly common in German, though I know a few guys named Hendrik, Henning, Holger which are considered as neither very spectacular, nor very embarrassing.
Common names, though old fashioned are (most guys with that name are around 60 years old): Hartmut, Heinrich, Horst, Hans, Hajo (an abbreviation of the double-name Hans-Joachim). "Horst" is also used as a swearword for someone who is rather stupid and slow in understanding.

How old is he?
Hans is very old fashion, sounds odd for a younger guy, sounds like a grandfather. Better take Hannes instead. Or Holger, or Harald, etc. Those are rather ageless at the moment IMHO. And sound a bit boring ;-)
