Gary F "It only requires use of a third-party outlet (e.g. that the comment be in a newspaper article, etc.); that the comment be directed at a specific person; and that the possibility exists that the comment could have a negative effect on the persons' profession" In terms of public figures it's actually a bit harder than that - you have to prove actual malice, and that's no simple task. Michael Mann would certainly fit the definition of a public figure; I don't know about Andrew Weaver. I agree with the rest of your post, though. --------- Good questions. All those involved in the 'climategate' emails are now involuntary public figures, including Briffa and Mann. I would argue that Mann was a limited public figure prior to this due to the 'hockey stick controversy', and any charges of defamation surrounding issues related to the hockey stick would require that actual malice be established. Though, defamation in general is hard to establish, and considering the location of much of these statements (i.e. blogs and message boards), even more so. You could probably find some published statements by the likes of Monckton or other popular members of the denialist misinformation machine that might be more fruitful. I'm no lawyer, but this is how I'd read it.

Why do you think you have to align with any political party? No American party really incorporates religious views.. Perhaps you would be happier in a theocracy.
