Are there any religions where leaders live in poverty instead of wealth?

Even if they just live "middle-class". Which leaders don't have corporate jets, popemobiles, or multiple mansions and wealth?

Update:

The Dali Lama is quite wealthy with mansion like homes in several US states.

Mother Theresa had millions, which she refused to use to help the poor and needy.

Update 2:

The Pope lives in unheard of wealth, despite the poverty of some followers.

Update 3:

Muhammed had enough wealth to support many wives, many children, and still spend his life in leisure as a writer.

All the snake handlers I ever met were poor as church mice.

  • From the beginning of time man used his first and only ally for his own personal gain. Over time, he has mastered it to a science (religion) and upped the ante. I don't know of one religion, popular local or international religious leader, who has not harvested greatly from the fold.

As long as mankind follows, rather than seeking providence from the Source he will continue to pour his loyalty and wealth into an unfathomable abyss of frenzied human piranhas.

Note* There are some who truly seek Truth, Light and Love in the One Who Is. They wear His Light, share His Love, speak His Truth.

You will not find them easily. They do not stand out in a crowd. They work behind the scenes, in the most precarious places, doing the most mundane, selfless and thankless jobs. They ask for nothing but, give all they can to others in need unconditionally. They are simply "beautiful" and so very rare. :

  • I heard that Muhammad and Ali used to live very simple lives inspite of having been the rulers of the Muslim world of the past.

Ali was almost steeped in poverty. He refused to access the wealth that he had inherited being the caliph.

Then you have Mohammad Mohsin, who had been a popular figure in South East Asia in the past, who devoted much of his inherited wealth towards education of Muslim students, and lead a simple life.

In Hinduism, Ishwarchandra Vidyashagar would make the cut as a religious leader who spent his life in simple ways. He was incredibly knowledgeable, and had worked tirelessly towards reformation of the Hindu religion in the then Bengal subcontinent. He is credited to have been the one responsible for introducing the practice of remarriage of Hindu widows.

Of course, I'm not citing these from secular sources. These are basically what I had learned during my days as a secondary school student.

Blessings Yes there are a lot's all over the World, take a trip to south and Central- America it's so sad. But we lived in a crocked World where the power to control and greed rules the World we know that it's not suppose to be like this but as i said the human laws are powerless. Nice question.

Most leaders don't live in wealth. Did you know that the salary of a seminary trained minister (one with a 3 year master's degree) is the same as a school teacher? Just google search minister salaries for yourself.

I have met 1000s of rabbis, imams, priests and ministers and never have once met one with even 1 mansion or jet. The closest I have ever come to that is a large faith based university actually owned a jet that was available for travel. The president of that institution lived in a house very similar to other university presidents, if not actually a scaled down.

You fail to understand the subtlety of it. Don't you see that no one would tolerate this? The key is that the Jews must make themselves appear to be the underdog. Only this can obscure their plans and enable them to play their enemies against each other. And the way they achieve this is by spreading vicious rumors about themselves, using convenient dupes who already hate Jews. That's where you come in. You are an essential element of their evil scheme. They wrote the Protocols for you to disseminate. So toil on, they're smirking up their sleeves. You're one of their most reliable agents! /sarcasm off, in case anyone missed it

I think you should add the word celebrated

    celebrated leaders

My best friends father was a preacher and he lived in poverty,

but he was considered by many to be the leader of a small local church.

Islam is certainly one. Muhammad himself lived a very poor life. His true successor Ali also lived so. There's an important point, however. They practised poverty though they used to work very hard. Wealth in Islam is not condemned by itself, unless it makes people forget God.

Apparently only Yellow Alarm Clock actually saw the word "leaders" in your question. Monks, nuns, and local preachers are followers.

the hindu saddhus live without any possessions except a food bowl, and beg for their food.

of course there are some who abuse the status, but historically, they've lived very austere lives.

all of them! To believe in the supernatural without a shred of evidence, is to destroy ones own brain, and the minds of those who look up to you as a leader. That is the most pathetic thing I can think of and Extreme poverty in my book.
