is a five year old verbally adept enough to accurately describe the ups and downs of bipolar disorder, or is his diagnosis being applied as a catchall for his hyperactivity and poor behavior (as i've known some doctors to do)? just because his family members have the disease doesn't mean he has it at the exclusion of other possible explanations. antipsychotic medications have physical and mental ramifications that a five year old would likely find confusing and alienating. i strongly consider you to seek another opinion...

You should get a second opinion from a second doctor children often have mood swings and it would be next to impossible to thoroughly test a 5 year old.
Has he seen a Doctor or just therapist?

IMHO 5 years old is too young to be diagnosed with bi-polar & medicated for it. I have a 6yo & certainly wouldn't be giving him any of the antipsychotics (which is the usual medication for bipolar) that I take to help with BPD.

Risperidol (I think that's how it's spelled). It is the only anti psychotic that has been approved for children but if it doesn't work they will try some of the others even if they haven't been approved for children. Lithium can also be used for children....
