Why do people assume that I'm a lesbian?
When I tell people that I don't date, they automatically assume that I'm a lesbian. Why?

Because they think all teenagers and young adults have dating in the forefront of their lives (when that definitely isn't always the case). So when you say you aren't dating, the suspect that it's a cover for something (this happens with anything. People think the truth is too boring so they create realities in their own mind. Tabloids are a perfect example) so rather than accept that you just don't want to date, they assume there has to be a motive - Being a lesbian.
My father always asks if I have a boyfriend EVERY time he calls, and I kept saying, "No!" so much that he finally said, "Okay. How about a girlfriend?" and it caught me off guard. Given, I am a lesbian so our situations are a little different. But I'm not out to my family yet, so it was still uncomfortable for me.
Don't get offended by it. You're probably pursuing goals of yours. I say go for it. You don't need to date if you don't want to right now, and it's no ones business. People are going to think what they want no matter what people say, so don't take offense and go on making your dreams a reality. :)

Because they irrationally assume that if you don't want men at the moment, "you be preferring women." The same thing usually happens with me at school. Albeit I am a lesbian, when a guy asks me out and I turn down his offer, he gets mad and says "You're a fukking lesbian!" because, apparently, if you turn down a guy you *must* automatically want a girl without any other possibilities.
