Algebra help - find the measure of the angles?

Two angles are complementary. The sum of the measure of the first angle and half the second angle is 86 degrees. Find the measures of the angles.

I think I have the two equations . . .

x = y = 90

x + 1/2y = 86

Am I close? What are the next steps to solve for both x and y?

Update:

Complementary angles are two angles that total 90 degrees, right?

Update 2:

That first equation should be x + y = 90.

    Complimentary angles add to 90.

    x + y = 90

    x + 1/2y = 86 >> Solve the system of equations by elimination:

    x + y = -90

    -x - 1/2y =- 86 >> Multiply both sides by - 1, then add the two eq.

    1/2y = 4

    y = 8

    x = 90 - 8 = 82

    Answer: 8 and 82

    x = 90 - 8 = 82

    if two angles r complimentary,then

    x+y=90......(1)

    & second equation is

    x+y/2=86......(2)

    subtract equation (2) from(1),we get

    y/2=4

    y=8......answer

    put the value of y in any of the two equations...

    I put the value in equation (1),we get

    x=90-8

    x=82......answer
