Why are theater seats separated by odds and evens?

(all the odd number seats on the left, all the even numbers on the right)

    Though it's not the same in every Theater the first answer is probably your best bet for why one would be set up that way

    The middle seat in the middle row in the middle of the theater. That way I get the best picture. But if I can't get the middle seats, I like the end of any row. I get claustrophobic sometimes.

    So when you are buying seats you know how close to center you are. The smaller the number the closer to center you are. If it started from one end then you could not quickly know where center is
