Gasnier to play for peanuts?

It has been reported in the Daily Telegraph that Mark Gasnier will play the rest of the season with the Dragons for $50K plus match payments of $4K so that they can fit him into the salary cap before a contract upgrade over the next 2 seasons.

How is this any different to the Melbourne Storm wanting to reduce their player payments to get their team under the cap? Seems like double standards to me. Thoughts.........

The Storm saga went that the players couldn't stay on a reduced contract because as a player they were they were worth $x so they couldn't be resigned for anything less than their value. This really has to flow on to othetr players and clubs as well. If they reckon Gasnier is only worth $50,000 a year, then the Dragons should snap him up at that price on a long range contract. That won't happen. If the Dragons get a player valued at $750,000 (his value to Stade Francais) for $50,000, then there is something terribly rotten in league. If he goes to a club with money still left in the cap, like the Sharks, fine.

Edit: Will he turn out for the other Steel City? I know he's supposed to be tied to the Dragons till 2012 but it wasn't Gasnier who broke the contract. The third party sponsor that was lined up for him didn't pay up.

I am going to be having some trouble accepting mark gasnier returning to the nrl before he went over seas i actual like the way he had played but now he is going to come back for a major money return ? the dragons would be better of getting players from their youth Academy Toyota team then getting gasnier back i reckon for his punishment he should play for the sharks lol but i also reckon that it will be hard and a disappointment for the younger players who are stepping up of now getting a regular place i know that michael weyman is not young but how would he get a place in the squad after he had work so hard to just play for the dragons i am sure that the dragons would have to released someone in order to be really under the cap but is a shame because one player would be drop because of mark gasnier returning to the dragons ...

My problem with Gaz returning is who will have to give up a backline spot for him? If Beau Scott and Matt Cooper stay in the centres, and (as League Central suggested .. thanks for the link dogsoldier) they slot Gasnier in on the wing, what happens to Jason Nightingale, who's been playing the house down.

I don't think that Gaz would want to play wing, so if he goes into the centre, then the suggestion is that Beau Scott can play back-row .. replacing whom?

Too much changing for a team who's leading the Competition, just to make way for someone who walked out on them. I want the Dragons to give this some serious thought .. every member of the team has been playing for each other, and now here comes someone who wanted to leave them in the lurch to chase money in France. I know he's a great player, but we've been playing pretty damn well without him!!

50k for a mark gasnier for most a season is great money.. but our team is working well, leave beau and jason on the right edge, forget about gaz.

The storm get busted, they want to reduce prices on legal contracts, nrl says no.

The dragons arn't reducing a contract, they're paying a player who has no contract 50k so they fit in the cap, the dragons way of cap management is great, no big stars, alot of 200-250k players, seems to work well for them.

    No double standards here bud.

If its true Gasnier is to come back and play for the Dragons this season then they can kiss their season goodbye as what has he done in the years he has played with them, and how well have they gone as a team after he left Minor Premiers last year after him going on top of the ladder again this year, what more can i say but GASNIER stay away and dont bring our DRAGONS down again.

True Dragonlady how can they replace someone thats been playing so good for the last 2 years since he left the team,to add to that we would still have J Morris in the side if Gasnier had of said he was leaving earlier in the year.As for him being great what has he done except HOG the ball all the time he was at the Dragons not many of the tries were scored by the winger on his outside so i say once again stay in France Gasnier we dont need you.

I've never rated him much as a player. But I'm puzzled as to why the Dragons would want him back. They've got Beau Scott and Matt Cooper. Morris can move to the centres quite easily.

If he returns to the NRL, I tip Roosters or Sharks

Simple. Storm were over the cap to start off with and would have continued to be over the cap unless they had been caught out. The Dragons are not over the cap and have made efforts to ensure their players are under the cap by releasing blokes like Chase Stanley, Justin Poore and Josh Morris.

It's not double standards, it's simply and example of one club rorting the cap and another working with it.

Well apparently he will be getting a massive pay rise later to soften the blow (no doubt at the expense of another young player).

I feel sorry for whoever is missing out cos Gaz wants to play "football" in AUS and get payed -- apparently playing for the Rebels he wouldnt get as much as he would with the Dragons. And some are still whinging they want more money!

Im over it all really. So greedy

@dragonlady its nice to see not all Dragons fans are starry eyed at his return. you have a great tean - why change???

I think it's great to have him back.

Scott is injured so he can fit in there for now, when he comes back shuffle him and bump one of the youngesters back to Toyota Cup or better yet, get rid of Dan Hunt.

It is completely different to the Storm. For starters they got caught cheating, why would you trust them now. Gaz left because he wasn't getting what his contract said but he's not able to play for another club in the NRL till 2013. I think it's a good deal, as good as he can get and next year give Dan Hunt the boot and we can keep Gaz..

Jeez, that's loyalty right there. I think he's a bit of an idiot cause he could be getting a lot more money elsewhere but if that's what he wants good on him.

I'm fine with him coming back, as long as it isn't in time to play this friday night.
