The AAA batteries in my calculator leaked and now it won't turn on. Is it ruined?
I have a TI-89 calculator that I have not used in some time. When I opened the battery cover, there was a whole bunch of dried up acid or calcium buildup. I brushed away the crusty stuff and replaced with fresh AAA batteries. The calculator will not turn on. Should I also replace the backup?

You could try to bring it to a Batteries Plus store, if you have near by, so they can figure out for you if it's ruin or not... I don't think they would charge you for figuring this out... Might be worth a shot.
You can find out if you have a store near by here:

The more common problem is corrosion on the contacts. It is not normally a problem of the corrosion getting into the calc it's self. You may try using backing soda on a moist small brush to see if you can clean the contacts better. you might even have to file them a little to get them clean enough to make contact with the batteries. If you have access to a meter you can check to see if there is voltage at the contacts which will show if they are still corroded.

Sorry to say that it is probably ruined.
When batteries leak, they leak acid, which is highly corrosive. This can cause major damage.
Don't spend any more money trying to fix it. Would be better to replace it.
