To answer seriously, one must first has to tackle the questions:

What is "2"? and What is "+"?

There is a marvelous little book by Landau (see the sources), usually recommended for advanced math students beginning university, which addresses those questions. It doesn't get as far as actually answering what does 2+2 equal, but sets up the reader to be able to answer such a question properly.

I seem to remember a story about a school with an inscription over the entrance which implies that their graduates should be able to properly answer this question. However I cannot find a reference. Perhaps I should pose that as a question for the Yahoo community ...

Literally, it equals 4.

If you're quoting from the play "1984", the answer is 5.

If you're doing the weird thing where you use the addition sign to put the integers as the digits, then the answer is 22.

There are an infinite number of solutions, however your simplified solution is 4.

using various processes the answer can easily be 2,3,4,5,or6
