should I become a pastor?
I'm a 17 year old boy who is a junior in high school. I have an IQ of 170, a 4.28 GPA, and a 2350 SAT score. I'm president of my class and captain of mock trial. I was sure I wanted to go to UCLA and then pursue a career as a politician. However, two weeks ago I became a Christian and now everything is changing. I've dived into church, and last week at Youth Group I gave my testimony and "preached". Everyone was really impressed with my presentation and told me that I would make an amazing pastor. I spoke again last night for an adult Bible Study group, and one of the men there is in charge of a scholarship for young men wanting to become pastors, and he basically offered it to me. The scholarship would include free-tuition at a local Christian college and financial aid on my dorm-room. All I have to do in return is be a theology major and work as a Youth pastor for the last two years of college. He also said that I would most likely be immediately hired to the pastoral staff at a church since the scholarship is prestigious in Baptist churches. It seems like a great offer, do you think should I pursue it? I mean, I would love to bring more people to Christ but it seems kind of soon after only being a Christian for two weeks. Plus, I've always wanted to have a lot of money but I know I won't if I am a pastor. Advice? Anything is appreciated :)
I guess that saying I "preached" is incorrect because I'm not ordained or anything. I just shared my testimony and talked about the story in John 9 and the blind man who was able to see after his encounter with Jesus. So, I should have said I spoke at church, not "preached." I talked for about 20 minutes each time

Dear Friend,
You sound as though you have great protential. Being a Pastor is really a calling belonging to the five-fold minsitry gifts. In Ephesians 4:11-12, it reads " And he gave some apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some pastors and teachers; for the perfection of the saints..."
You have to hear definately from God yourself regarding any of these callings. If you have a passion for God's work, pray about it and seek a word of wisdom or knowledge concerning these callings. My gift is teaching the word of God and I am hearing through prophetic confirmation that eventually I will have my own church. However, as an anointed musician, I had to wait sometime because revelation of God's plans are progressive.
I think that you need more time to reflect on this unless you receive a direct word from God. If you are not hearing from God, do not let anybody force or coerce you into doing anything in the flesh. It would be a tradegy if you trained to be a Pastor and found out it was not your calling. You must be called, appointed and anointed by the Holy Spirit for the office of a Pastor.
If you have a passion for winning souls, you could study theology by taking extra courses during you college tenure. If you find that is your calling then do it full time. Maintain the passion for winning souls and contine to study God's word assiduously. If you do happen to qualify for any of those ministry gifts, you would be equipped by your studies. You would lose nothing. That is really what happened to me. I studied Greek and Hebrew and took the Bible seriously courses. Later I found out that God called me to preach the Gospel. You can do the same, but do not let anybody attach any serious conditions to your study at this pre-mature time.

I am a believer in Christ, so don't take this the wrong way :).... With an intelligence of that level, why not do both? Go to UCLA and pursue the politician niche. There is no reason that you cannot help out at any church and be a strong contributor while also being a politician. If anything, a politician with that wide range of talents including being involved in church can be very beneficial. Even if you think you want to be a pastor, apply to UCLA and sign up for everything that you normally would; i.e. orientation and scheduling. Another option is to be involved in the church while in college and continue to be involved until you are of retiring age. After you're "done" being a politician, who's to say you can't be a pastor then? Good luck, you have lots of time to figure everything out! Give it some time to soak in...being new to a church is exciting!

What is a Pastor? Does it make you better by being called a Doctor? Jesus never required any of his disciples to have formal education regarding Salvation. Christian-dom comes by the act of the Holy spirit inside us,a gift from God. Sure you may be very smart and intellectual and lack the basic things of God. Sure you have just been a Christian for two weeks. God makes a promise and he never exposes the in between. He will let you see the beginning and the end. It is the waiting and going through the wilderness that makes you want to scream. Sure you have been cheered on. but those same people will change in a moment and you will think you have fallen.
God does not care about your IQ GPA or Sat score. God wants you just as you are. If you become and amazing Pastor it will be by the will of God not men. you will not be able to do aNYTHING without God and the work of his spirit within you. If you pursue anyone thing or anyone it will be God.
So you spoke by the power of God within you. They gave you all the praise. You need to give God all the praISE and be thankful always for your change and love for what you have learned in the house of God.God promises us life but not always money but there are some in the scriptures that were very wealthy. God wants us to be giving and passionate about others. He provides so we can provide for others. Being a pastor is not a walk in the park. People will judge you and call you many things. Especially if you have a zeal for the word of God.
You will have money as a Pastor? Why because you are looking for that instead of a need for others to be saved, that will be your temptation. You have a heart condition to have more. Now you have less of the one that can help you. Jesus is the one that can clear your head and you will know the truth.
God calls us to greatness. We go through many things that are uncomfortable during this transition. It can be painful and cause us to want to give up. The question is do you have the ability to stay in spite of any changes God allows in your life. Even if you are poor as a beggar or rich as a king.
You ask yourself is God worth it? People will offer you many things. God offers you love and hope for your future. Whom do you believe? God or man. You think it is simple. All I have to do in return?
What does the word of God say do? what did Jesus do while he was here? There are lots of people with high IQ and know nothing about life and circumstances. Time and chance changes. Just keep on living.
Source(s): Many people give Testimonies and Preach. Sure some are impressed. So! Without faith in God can you please him? No! It is kinda soon. So you better ask God. Nothing is impossible for what God chooses to do with his people. When God does a perfect work in us he will continue it until the day of his return. Who are we to make a fuss about whom are what he chooses. Go ahead. In time you will see God in this if he made this happen. Take the offer. Saul was on a horse. He thought what he was doing was right. Jesus spoke to him and he experienced a dramatic change. Yet through his suffer he learned humility and a love for Christ. Read the book of Acts. Ask God for wisdom and knowledge. Start a prayer life. God will clean out your closet. You will see the hidden you, then you will say God now what? Keep walking and do not give up. - 5 years ago
When God calls you, you go where He leads. You don't take a poll and see who around you thinks that's a good idea! (I did, but when it's put that way it sounds silly, doesn't it!) When Peter and Jesus were talking on the beach after the resurrection, Peter asked Jesus what John's role in the church was going to be, and Jesus said "What is that to you?" All these questions the disciples had before His death about "Who is the greatest" should have ended already! There is something I do notice about life: In the story of the Good Samaritan, as it plays out in real life today, you cannot be the Priest and the Levite and the Good Samaritan all at the same time. You notice in the world today that pastors and evangelists have support teams around them. Well, as a woman, you automatically Are the support team! In the Jewish laws when only the men were required to come to the yearly festivals, that was because sometimes the ladies were busy with their own little flocks at home! No matter who you are in this world, if you do the right thing, somebody is going to hate it! So my recommendation for happiness is, keep your eyes on Jesus and keep Him smiling. Do your best at everything that comes your way and listen for His call, wherever He leads. We are in the end times, when the prophet Joel said God's spirit would be poured out on all flesh, It will be amazing to see what He will do with you, if you're willing for the adventure!

I'll tell you something. God has chosen everybody to be something for his honor and his glory. He has chosen you to be something great. If you become a pastor without God's consent, then you won't be successful in what you will be doing. God doesn't make a person a pastor just because that person took classes. God makes a person a pastor because he was chosen to be one. You also do not have to be ordained to preach. God has given me the opportunity to preach three times in front of the whole congregation. God is not going to say "Oh he doesn't have the right credentials. The Bible talks about not doing that. You can still follow your dream and become a pastor. The Bible says in James 2:1-4
1 My brethren, that your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ is no respecter of persons. 2Because if it comes into your assembly a man with a gold ring and fine clothes, and also comes in a poor tattered clothing, 3and look upon with pleasure, that wears the fine clothing and say, Sit here in a good place, and you say to poor: Estate Stand there, or sit here under my footstool; 4have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?
It says that some people may not let you become what God wants you to be because you don't have the right credits or you are not ordained, but let them be they will see later on that you are a pastor of great power in Jesus Christ. What you have to do is propose yourself to pray for at least 30-60min and ask for what you need help on. God will surely help you. I can safely say that I have received help from him. He has helped me in many special ways. My friend that were my friends don't really see the things that God has put in my but later on I will have the triumphant walk because God himself has been with me. I know that a person needs prayer and word. With those two things in your life, you will be more than qualified to be a preacher, but it is true, you have to be INTO God and have the communication with Him so that God can work through you easier. Humble your heart to him and God will listen. Psalms 138:6 says
6 Though the Lord is great, he cares for the humble,
but he keeps his distance from the proud.
You have to base your beliefs on the Bible, not by pastors or any other person that claims to know the Bible. The pastors are there as teachers, leaders, and followers of Christ, but you should not base your beliefs on the pastor. The pastors are there to preach what God has given them and they will always teach and give you the advice that you need to get to God better. So just take this into consideration and be considerate of what has been said here. If God has called you, then he has called you, He will give you what you need, just pray with faith, that is how Elijah brought fire from the heavens, or how Joshua made the sun stay where it was for 3 days straight. Because they believed in God who gave them life and took them out of bad situations. Isaiah 44:8 says
"Do not tremble; do not be afraid.
Did I not proclaim my purposes for you long ago?
You are my witnesses—is there any other God?
No! There is no other Rock—not one!”
Just do what you think is right, God will back you up if it is in his plan. I think that God made me read your question so that He can clarify your concerns. He will surely help you, just ask him to with faith.I'll pray for you so that God may give you that push to make the right decision. God Bless You.

God bless you, just to let you know, many people that are brand new in Christ are so enthusiastic and
on fire for god that right away they want to preach. its not a bad idea but you must be sure that it is god
the one that has given the calling to become a pastor and not man.you are brand new in the lord, and i
am not saying there is or there isn't a calling in your life but i know many people who had the desire to
become pastors, they went to school, got all the paperwork they needed but god had not called them to
preach. maybe there was another calling in their lives or it wasn't the right time. pastoring is a lot of work and responsability, its not just looking good in front of a lot of people because you will be accountable to god. the higher you go with god the greater the accountability so if i were start seeking
the lord with all your heart and he shall direct your paths. also make sure that everything that is being said to you is according to scripture and not mans own ideas.
Source(s): i have been in the lord for about 12 years, not as a religion where people go to church only when people are sick, dead, or its new years eve but on a regular personal daily basis. - PaulLv 71 decade ago
Three things....
(1) If money is your drive, you have your priorities all wrong.
(2) It is way to early for you, or anyone else to make this decision. I can't imagine your church letting you preach at this point. God's word says that anyone who preaches should not be a "novice"
(3) You need to be asking this question to God, not on a forum where 3/4 of those answering are Atheists, or have no clue what the Bible says.
Give it to God, Give it time, Seek His will, and you will know when it is God's time.

A 4.28 GPA? A 2350 on your SAT?
Either you're a retard or a liar, because those are impossible. Strait A's is 4.0, and the highest you can get on your SAT is 1600.
Edit: By the way, interesting that on your answer about the average IQ's of A students, B students, ext..., you claimed to have a 158 IQ, but now you're claiming to have 170.

first the love of money is the root of all evil
2nd you cannot serve God and Mammon
a person cannot drink of the cup of devils and the cup of the LORD>
i think if you have a calling, and you know you are called you should pursue the the church.
however, Jesus said many are called but, Few are chosen.
only faith, commitment and sincerity can be a true symptom of a disciple of christ, BTW a true disciple of christ will deny Himself and take up His Cross.
i cannot righteously tell you what to do. i could be wrong and you would follow an incorrect path, i could be right and you could forsake what i say.
the choice must be weighed in the balance and must be yours to KEEP.

Don't make a life long decision based on something that came into your life only 2 weeks ago. You may indeed be destined for the ministry, but give the whole process some time and of course pray for guidance about it.
