2010 WC: Which absent players will be missed the most during the tournament?

(ANOTHER QUESTION: Is defensive midfielder the most important role in a football starting XI?)

http://sg.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Al...

The 30-men preliminary squads have been announced.

As always, many star players had their finals’ hopes gone in the smoke, adding to the numbers of those whose countries fell along the lengthy qualification process.

(Retired players are not included)

From this group of players alone, we can build a superb team capable of winning the trophy come June had FIFA allocated an extra berth for non-qualified players. Well, I know it will never happen, but it sure does sound interesting doesn’t it?

Who do you think will be missed the most?

Here is my list (a pretty long one)

--> Mohammed ABOUTRIKA (Egypt)

--> Emmanueal ADEBAYOR (Togo)

--> Rene ADLER (Germany)

--> ADRIANO (Brazil)

--> Andrei ARSHAVIN (Russia)

--> Gareth BALE (Wales)

--> Mario BALOTELLI (Italy)

--> David BECKHAM (England)

--> Yossi BENAYOUN (Israel)

--> Karim BENZEMA (France)

--> Jose BOSINGWA (Portugal)

--> Esteban CAMBIASSO

--> Petr CECH (Czech Rep)

--> Marouane CHAMAKH (Morocco)

--> Christian CHIVU (Romania)

--> Ivan CORDOBA (Colombia)

--> Alessandro DEL PIERO (Italy)

--> Edin DZEKO (Bosnia & Herzegovina)

--> Darren FLETCHER (Scotland)

--> Zoltan GERA (Hungary)

--> Shay GIVEN (Ireland)

--> Owen HARGREAVES (England)

--> Zlatan IBRAHIMOVIC (Sweden)

--> Frederic KANOUTE (Mali)

--> Seydou KEITA (Mali)

--> Kevin KURANYI (Germany)

--> Olof MELLBERG (Sweden)

--> Luka MODRIC (Croatia)

--> Mamadou NIANG (Senegal)

--> NIHAT Kahveci (Turkey)

--> John O’SHEA (Ireland)

--> Ivica OLIC (Croatia)

--> Michael OWEN (England)

--> Goran PANDEV (Macedonia)

--> Roman PAVLYUCHENKO (Russia)

--> Aaron RAMSEY (Wales)

--> Juan Roman RIQUELME (Argentina)

--> RONALDINHO (Brazil - to be confirmed)

--> Fransesco TOTTI (Italy)

--> Antonio VALENCIA (Ecuador)

--> Thomas VERMAELEN (Belgium)

--> Patrick VIEIRA (France)

--> Javie ZANETTI (Argentina)

Please explain your pick. Why do you think that the coach's decision to leave him out was unjustified and will prove to haunt the team during the tournament? Feel free to add new names to the list.

Thanks

    I'm not sure why some players are on your list like Adebayor, Ramsey or Aboutreka as they won't be missed except for ppl from those countries.

    The one that will definitely be missed are ppl like Ronaldinho, Riquelme and Benzema.

    Ronaldinho: I think it's a tactical thing with him as Dunga has a very disciplined philosophy on how he wants his team to play and Ronnie doesn't always track back and defend and may be a distraction to the team at times.....all his partying, years of not playing well and undiscipline caught up with him.

    Riquelme: Pretty much has a beef with him, Riquelme has a nasty attitude when he things don't go his way, very difficult nature and doesn't always take direction well (Pellegrini) he's hell of a talent though

    Benzema: This is the one I'm still not sure about other than he hasn't played enough with Real, a move he probably regrets now, great player but same thing as Riquelme nasty attitude like he told the coach either I start or I don't play.....I've been told he's big headed.

    I think Barcelona fans will miss Ibra. Since his team couldn't qualify.

    Italians might miss Totti.

    Micheal Owen will definatley be missed by the England fans, along wiith Beckham.

    Riquelme, will be missed by Argentianians fan.

    And Ronaldo will DEF be missed by everyone, but it's not a huge blow that he didn't make the list. Because look at him, he's outof shape, and hasn't been playing for the National Team.

    And if Ronaldinho doens't go. I think he will be the ultimate most missed. MY friend was UPSET when she saw the list that Ronaldinho wasn't on, but then Dunga changed it and added him in. Now we shall wait till June 1st to see if he's apart of it or not.

    Probably David Beckham because he's one of the greatest players in England. Also Juan Roman Riquelme will be missed because he's really talented and a great soccer player.

    None!

    Why? Because the Copa de Mundo (World Cup) is not about 1 player!

    This about the 32 teams that train and won there right in after 4 years!

    The winner can say they beat the best 31 others to be the Best in the World for 4 more years.

    World Cup not about Messi, Ronaldo, Rooney, Torres, Blanco, Donovan, Pirlo, Gallas, etc.

    It's about the World coming together and watching the beautiful game!

    it amazes me every time to see how argentina can afford to leave zanetti out and cambiasso as in my view they would be a integral part of my sqaud i think that cambiasso is arquably the best defensive midfielder in the world no worse then marsharano who is hot temperd at times.

    lastly the fact karin benzema is left out is mainly down to his unabillity to start games at real madrid his goals to game ratio is not poor but the fact that they have two other strikers (higuan and ronaldo ) who are in formiddable form unlucky for him. on the other hand i hugely doubt france have 3 or four better strikers then benzema because poor season or not he could have lit up this world cup

    Agree with your list, but I'd add
