5 Answers2010 FIFA World Cup(TM)1 decade ago2010 WC: Will South Africa BAFANA BAFANA prevail?
The opening game is within 8 hours.
The hosts will kick off against Mexico.
On paper, the Mexicans clearly have the edge but World Cups are not decided based on theories.
In many forums I've seen some Mexican fans say (rather arrogantly) that the South Africans have forgotten that they are not even in the top 80 world rankings and Mexico will teach them a football lesson come June 11.
I say, beware of the power of vuvuzela.
I believe vuvuzela will be the unique feature, and perhaps deciding factor, of 2010 WC.
It is likely to work in favor of the African teams.
They might not win this opening game, but I back the Bafana Bafana to show why no host nations have failed to advance beyond first round in WC history.
WHAT DO YOU THINK?

5 Answers2010 FIFA World Cup(TM)1 decade ago2010 WC: How important are friendlies in determining ENGLAND’S FIRST-CHOICE KEEPER?
It’s a three-horse race between David James, Robert Green & Joe Hart.
James & Green seem to be neck-to-neck, having started 5 games each in the qualifying.
However, Capello recently remarked that Hart does stand a one in three chance to seize the position between the English posts.
MY QUESTION
How crucial will performances in the friendly matches be towards Capello’s decision on England’s first-choice keeper?
The two games are Mexico tonight, May 24 and Japan, May 30.
My money would be on James as he has the most experience among the three (with all respect) rather mediocre players in a position which has for so long been England’s main weakness.
But what are the chances of Hart winning the race despite having limited international experience?
Explain your rationale rather than just picking names.

5 Answers2010 FIFA World Cup(TM)1 decade ago2010 CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL: Main battle in defensive midfield between VAN BOMMEL and CAMBIASSO?
There are a few interesting facts on 2010 Champions League final
1) Either van Gaal or Mourinho will become only the 3rd man to win 2 CL titles with 2 different clubs as a coach after 1995 and 2004 respectively.
2) Eto'o might become only the 3rd man to win 2 consecutive CL titles with 2 different teams after Dessaily & Paolo Sousa.
3) Sneijder & Robben will be playing in Santiago Bernabeu and either one will be laughing at Florentino Perez who kicked them out of Real Madrid & is likely to attend the match as president of the host club (I think this is the the most interesting fact! No offense to Real fans haha).
4) Ribery is out due to suspension; a Bayern loss will definitely or at least partially attributed to his loss which saw UEFA surprisingly handing him a three-match ban.
5) In my opinion the main battle will not be between Cesar-Lucio and Robben-Olic or Butt-Lahm with Sneijder-Milito but between van Bommel & Cambiasso. Perhaps I am biased as I have the view that defensive midfielder is the most important position in a football team, but with Inter set to play defensively as they did against Barca, Cambiasso will definitely be playing a very crucial role. And van Bommel as Bayern captain will have to be at his best if the Germans are to win.
Personally, I think the match will end in a goal draw perhaps 1-1 after 120 minutes with Bayern, being a German club, winning the ensuing penalties by a one-goal margin.
Ultimately, I think the winners will symbolise the victory of one football style over the other: either Mourinho's "Factory football" Inter or van Gaal's "Fantasy footbal" Bayern as I write in the following link

5 AnswersUEFA Champions League1 decade ago2010 WC: How far will everyone's favorite team today, SPAIN, go in South Africa?
PLEASE ANSWER MY OTHER QUESTIONS ON 2010 WORLD CUP - THANKS
http://sg.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ag...
http://sg.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ag...
Judging from the strength and the depth of the squad, Spain is definitely among the best, if not the top, among the 32 teams in 2010 World Cup.
They have not one, not two, but three world-class goalkeepers in Casillas, Reina & Valdes; possibly the best trio of keepers in a WC squad in history.
They have Barca duo of Puyol & Pique at the heart of the defence with ferocious wing backs like Ramos & Arbeloa running up and down to help the attack.
They have Xabi Alonso, whom I think is one of the best defensive midfielders today.
They have yet another Barca duo of Xavi & Iniesta, with the likes of Fabregas & David Silva ready to supplement them.
They also have arguably the most fearsome striking duo in David Villa & Fernando Torres.
All these with the likes of Albiol, Marchenna & Pedro waiting in the sidelines for their chance to shine.
And perhaps most importantly of all, they have a superbly-experienced coach in former Real Madrid manager Vicente del Bosque.
It is thus no wonder at all that most people have put Spain as their team to beat in 2010 World Cup in 3 weeks’ time.
HOWEVER,
I disagree with this general opinion.
Obviously people are carried away by the hype of Spain being the reigning champions of the previous major international tournament.
Everyone wanted France to win 2002 WC, Brazil in 2006 WC & Italy in Euro 2008 just because they had won their last major tournaments respectively. But in the end no one made it past the quarter finals.
The huge amount of pressure for the Spanish team will be their main undoing. Besides, while their group stages draw is very favorable they will meet either Brazil or Portugal or Cote d'Ivoire in the second round.
And many key players are racing against time to regain match fitness, including Xavi, Iniesta, Fabregas & Torres.
I bet Spain will not make it past the quarter finals. To Spanish fans, I'm not against Spain, just making a conclusion out of the history, draws & injury update.
WHAT DO YOU THINK?

13 Answers2010 FIFA World Cup(TM)1 decade ago2010 UCL FINAL: Inter FACTORY FOOTBALL v FANTASY FOOTBALL Bayern?
So we are within 48 hours of the 2010 Champions League final between Bayern Munich & Inter Milan.
Perhaps many of you are wondering what the hell are 'fantasy football' & 'factory football'?
Well, I use these terms to describe football styles of play, attacking-minded & defensive-minded respectively.
Perhaps 2010 final will be the first in years which pits 2 teams which truly embody these distinct football styles.
Bayern is playing "fantasy football" under Louis van Gaal with their explosive offensive football, having scored a staggering 12 goals, averaging to 2 per game in the knockout stages.
On the other hand, Inter under the 'Special One' has practised a rather "factory football" with systematic defensive tactics as demonstrated in the famous taming of Barcelona over two legs in the semifinals.
Many people go for Inter because they have Jose Mourinho but don't forget that he was under Louis van Gaal in Barcelona.
Personally, I feel it will be a very tight encounter with the victors winning by only a one-goal margin, or perhaps having to go the penalty shootouts, the 5th in the last 10 finals after 2001, 2003, 2005 & 2008; the first of which was won by the German club.
Which team will emerge victorious?
Will it be the coaches who ultimately determines the outcome of the game?
Will it symbolize the triumph of one style of play over the other?
Or do you disagree with the terms of "fantasy football" and "factory football"?

In the above page I was asking which player is going to be missed the most in the World Cup.
I was undecided back then.
But now it is clear: Michael Ballack.
Yes people, his injury during the 2010 FA Cup Final will take approximately 8 weeks just for him to return to training.
No chance of making the World Cup.
All made worse by the fact that he got the injury is his last game of the season.
Oh man, it can hardly get more heartbreaking than this.
Before this news, Germany were one of the top 4 teams in my opinion along with Argentina, England & Netherlands.
It now seems that I have to revise my prediction to just top 3.
What do you think of Ballack's absence?
How far will it affect Germany?

9 Answers2010 FIFA World Cup(TM)1 decade agoTHOMAS CUP 2010: Indonesia di final pertama dalam 8 tahun!?
(PERTANYAAN LAIN TENTANG PIALA DUNIA 2010 AFRIKA SELATAN, IN ENGLISH)
http://sg.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ah...
Bagaimana menurut anda?
Maju terus Indonesia! Mari kita rebut kembali!
Terima kasih.

(ANOTHER QUESTION: Is defensive midfielder the most important role in a football starting XI?)
http://sg.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Al...
The 30-men preliminary squads have been announced.
As always, many star players had their finals’ hopes gone in the smoke, adding to the numbers of those whose countries fell along the lengthy qualification process.
(Retired players are not included)
From this group of players alone, we can build a superb team capable of winning the trophy come June had FIFA allocated an extra berth for non-qualified players. Well, I know it will never happen, but it sure does sound interesting doesn’t it?
Who do you think will be missed the most?

--> Fransesco TOTTI (Italy)

15 AnswersFIFA World Cup (TM)1 decade ago2010 WC: Which position is the most important in football?
33 days to the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa!
Everyone is making predictions as to who have the best chances to seize the coveted trophy from Fabio Cannavaro.
For me, the teams that have the most potential are not the ones with the best attacking midfielders or strikers, who (rather unfairly) tend to get the most limelight all the time.
I think, the most important role is those in the defense, with the defensive midfielder position standing out for me.
A football game starts with the score of 0-0. A strong defense would ensure a point, or avoid elimination & gain the chance to go to extra time in knockout stages of a tournament.
Why defensive midfielder?
As the player who stays behind while his teammates (including wing backs & at times center backs) are going up attacking, he has the responsibility of taming the opponents' counter-attacks.
When the teams builds up an attack, he is the player to read the game & start the flow of passes which would eventually lead to the opponents' box.
In the last 4 major international tournaments' which I have closely followed, all the winning sides have renowned & critically-acclaimed defensive midfielders (Brazil 2002 WC's Gilberto Silva, Greece's Euro 2004's Theodoros Zagorakis, Italy 2006 WC's Gennaro Gattuso & Spain's Euro 2008 Marcos Senna).
2010 is set to be no different.
What is your opinion?
Is defensive midfielder that important a role?
If not, which position is more important in football?
I'd greatly appreciate explanation to your answer.
Thanks,

36 AnswersPolls & Surveys1 decade agoTRIBUTE TO VICTIMS OF AUSTRALIAN FOREST FIRES: what can we do to honor their sacrifices?
First of all, lets join the world in paying tribute to the victims of the forest fires in Victoria.
Im not an Australian, but I do feel the pain you all have been going through.
May their passing be a lesson learnt for us, to never take the power of nature for granted.
http://www.abc.net.au/news/video/2009/02/23/249871...
The fires have taken lives of at least 209 individuals and innumerable wildlife animals and destroyed thousands of homes.
It is suspected that the fire started with an arsonist or intense heat wave.
Whatever it is, what is most important right now is for all Australians to pick themselves up and rebuild the cities and lives of the survivors.
Thus it is very heartening to view how those who attended the national memorial service had the moral courage to look to the future, beyond all the sufferings.
My question is:
WHAT CAN WE DO TO HONOR THE PASSING OF ALL THE VICTIMS?
I hope it wont only be in form of financial or medical help, as these last only in short run.
What is far more important is how to ensure that this incident will be the last to ever occur on Australian land, and hopefully even the whole world.
How can we all do our parts to prevent any forest fire in the future?
How can we make sure that we know what to do to help ourselves and our community in event of such fires?
How can we smoothen the rescue process in the aftermath of such events?
These are important questions we need to ask of ourselves.
To honour the sacrifices of the fallen Australians.
Let us ensure that their passing will NOT be in vain.
Please be respectful in your comments.
God bless the victims and people of Australia.

3 AnswersOther - Society & Culture1 decade agoIN GOOD CONSCIENCE: dont we need more sportsmen with moral courage like venus williams?
Hey guys.
First of all, let me clarify this: I don’t have any political affiliation.
As you all might have heard, Venus Williams won the Dubai Tennis Championship.
But Im much more concerned with what she had to say during the post-match press conference.
http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5...
As highly politicized as sports is, political values should NOT be mixed together with sports.
This is not the matter of right and wrong, or whose political view is upright and whose is not.
Sports are supposed to be played in the spirit of sportsmanship and brotherhood.
When politics come into the equation, these values are easily wiped off and that definitely does no good for sports.
My question is:
SHOULD SPORTS BE MIXED WITH POLITICS?
When Israeli athlete Shahar Peer was denied visa entry for the tournament due to alleged racial discrimination, I was deeply disheartened.
Tennis is a sport well known for its highly respectful manner.
This incident has tainted this clean reputation, for sure.
Luckily, Venus Williams came to the rescue with a highly commendable act by saluting Peer after the tournament.
Well it could have had more impact had she spoken up during the course of the tournament.
But just to stand up for the politically prejudiced against takes a lot of courage, and we have to credit Venus for that.
DON’T WE NEED MORE SPORTSMEN LIKE VENUS WHO HAVE THE MORAL COURAGE TO SPEAK UP FOR THE PREJUDICED?
With more athletes like her, sports will become a much better place than what it is today.
And this is likely to encourage more racial and political tolerance to the world, considering the massive effect sports have today.
Please put forth respectful arguments, rather than just answering ‘yes’ or ‘no’.

10 AnswersTennis1 decade ago2009 OSCARS: indian rags-to-riches v Nixon interview v elderly infant v Holocaust dilemmas v gay politician?
Hey guys
After 364 days, the Oscar is back, arguably with a bang.
The list of nominees has, in my opinion at least, incorporated more high-profile names.
http://www.oscar.com/nominees/
My focus is on the Best Picture award.
Here are the five:
-> THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON
Arguably the most intriguing storyline, with a man born with physical condition of an elderly and grows up physically in reverse.
13 nominations, Director: David Fincher, Starring: Brad Pitt
-> FROST/NIXON
The most controversial political movie of the year, depicting interviews of late former US president Richard Nixon with TV personality David Frost.
5 nominations, Director: Ron Howard, Starring: Frank Langella & Michael Sheen
-> MILK
The most sexually daring nominee, based on life of late Harvey Milk, the first openly gay politician to hold a public post in America’s history.
8 nominations, Director: Gus van Sant, Starring: Sean Penn
-> THE READER
Continuing Oscars’ tradition to pick historical movies, it draws a very dramatic picture on the impacts of World War II – Holocaust, to the subsequent generations.
5 nominations, Director: Stephen Daldry, Starring: Kate Winslet
-> SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE
A critically-acclaimed movie on the clichéd rags-to-riches story, but with an Indian flavour.
10 nominations, Director: Danny Boyle & Loveleen Tandan, Starring: Dev Patel & Freida Pinto
Personally, I feel that Benjamin Button is the most well-placed to seize the coveted Best Picture award.
I am sick of dark, political movies in past years like The Departed and No Country For Old Men. Not that Im against the genre, but Ive had enough of it.
So for me, its Benjamin Button against Slumdog Millionaire.
Benjamin Button wins it if it was up to me as it has the most refreshing storyline; thinking of a man aging backwards is brilliant. Slumdog Millionaire also has highly creative script but the fact that it is based on Asian culture seems to be dampening its chances.
Im an Asian myself by the way, so Im just thinking objectively.
What do you think?
What about other major categories like the Best Actor and Best Actress?
Please put forth respectable arguments, rather than just picking a movie.

4 AnswersMovies1 decade agoIN GOOD CONSCIENCE: can stanford’s fallout possibly be a sign of economic catastrophe in sport in near future?
Hey guys
When the current economic crisis started rearing its ugly head late last year, I didn’t expect it to affect world sporting to such a high scale.
How terribly wrong I was for thinking that way.
As you all know, Allen Stanford has become the latest oligarch to plunge himself to fraud charges.
However, he is the first whose business does greatly concern about sport.
His list of clients include distinguished sportsmen like golfer Vijay Singh, footballer Michael Owen and West Indies Cricket Board.
These few names are more than enough to show the scale of the problem, and how it affects a broad range of sports around the world.
The fact that sports today are increasingly commercialized does not help at all.
And lets face it; without money, sport wouldn’t have become what it is today.
My question is:
CAN THIS BE A SIGN OF EVEN MORE ECONOMIC FALLOUT IN SPORT IN NEAR FUTURE?
What will happen if the consortium behind NBA franchises like Boston Celtics suddenly collapses?
What will happen if the bank where tennis player Rafael Nadal or F1 driver Lewis Hamilton is liquidated all of a sudden?
Worse still, what if the main sponsors of leading competitions like the NHL, English Premier League and Summer Olympics declare itself bankrupt without any notice?
Sport will be in total jeopardy.
It is a highly unpleasant prospect, seriously.
What do you think?
Are most sports investors economically sound and safe, or are they part of the yet-to-be-revealed crooked conglomerates around the world?
Please put forth accurate and respectable argument, rather than just answering ‘yes’ or ‘no’.
