2010 WC: How important are friendlies in determining ENGLAND’S FIRST-CHOICE KEEPER?
It’s a three-horse race between David James, Robert Green & Joe Hart.
James & Green seem to be neck-to-neck, having started 5 games each in the qualifying.
However, Capello recently remarked that Hart does stand a one in three chance to seize the position between the English posts.
MY QUESTION
How crucial will performances in the friendly matches be towards Capello’s decision on England’s first-choice keeper?
The two games are Mexico tonight, May 24 and Japan, May 30.
My money would be on James as he has the most experience among the three (with all respect) rather mediocre players in a position which has for so long been England’s main weakness.
But what are the chances of Hart winning the race despite having limited international experience?
Explain your rationale rather than just picking names.

Most managers have already decided on their No 1 goalkeeper. Unless the goalkeeper gets injured, the friendlies aren't really important on this issue.
These friendlies are far too near to the World Cup. So most teams will take it easy knowing any serious injuries and they will be out of the World Cup tournament.
James should be the No 1, barring any injuries. He has been a revelation throughout the last couple of seasons.
Can you imagine? If England wins the World Cup, and James goes on to manage Portsmouth, it will be the first time a player has done that.

o.k. i'm goin 2 luv answerin this question. david james is very experienced and no1 is questioning that but this is as clear as daylight; u must always go with whu is the better player evrytime over whu has the most experience. wat i will never understand about football is why managers will choose an old and out-of-date player just becus of his experience over a young but very clearly 'much better player', why is that? i will never understand wat the differance is between playin 4 ur club or playin 4 ur cuntry, there is none!!!!! especially if u can do it at the highest level i.e. the premier league, then why on godz green earth can u NOT do it at international level? think of all the premier league clubs this season and which goalkeeper has had the best season, james, green or hart? wat is so much like rocket-science 4 a manager 2 not be able 2 work this ridiculous dilemma out? i need 2 know the anwer becus it makes no real sense and is hurtin my fricken skull!!!!!! neways back 2 ur question, i think james has as much chance of being the no.1 goalie 4 the world cup as emile heskey has of bein wayne rooneyz strike partner!!!!! is it really likely? maybe, but only for the start of the tournament against the usa just becus capello might not want 2 change things 2 early. but i wud much much rather joe hart becus he very clearly has had the best season out of all the english keepers full-stop! agen, u must go with ur best player evry time. i wud have choosen rob green over james simply becus he has had a more successful season i.e. west ham have finished higher in the league than useless pompey. there u go. but i wud honestly 4get both james and green and i wud of personally gone with the next best thing 2 joe hart, and that wud of been paul robinson. he has experience with england and simply has been a better player than both james and green this season. how high did birmingham and blackburn finish and how low did west ham and pompey finish? newayz, robinson aint goin an thats that, ridiculous. i want joe hart as the england no.1 all the way through the tournamnet but wat capello chooses is a totally different story. if he is as intelligent as he makes out, then he will use hart as the keeper in the japan game 4 the whole 90 minutes and it might remind him how well birmingham did this season becus of there goalkeeper.

I would have Joe Hart in goal. Green impressed against Mexico he made some great saves. James has experience but i think it should be time for him to step aside now.

England has settled on their keeper. The friendlies are very important to evaluate which players are in form -
