start by multiplying out the brackets
-4x-8=20 (remember it is -4 outside the bracket and minus x a plus is a minus)
you now have to do the same to both sides of the equation
add 4x
-8=4x+20 (by doing this you are making x positive which is the best thing to do)
-20
-28=4x
divide by 4
x=-7

Step one: distribute the -4 into the parenthesis.
-4x - 8 = 20.
Step two: add 8 to both sides.
-4x = 28.
Step three: divide each side by -4.
x = -7.

Why did the r tard above just give the answer and not explain?
1.) distribute the -4 ------> -4x + -8 = 20
2.) Add +8 to both sides ------> -4x = 28
3.) Divide by -4 both sides ----------> x = -7

Multiply each bit in the brackets...
-4x-8=20
Add 8 to each side.
-4x=28
Divide by -4.
x=28/-4
Simplify.
x=-7
