Doesn't Dirk play better under extreme playoff pressure than any superstar in the NBA right now? (Read inside)?
Read all, then respond
A lot of people try and ignore or downplay some of the bad instances that LBJ and Kobe have and single out two of Dirk's bad moments to erase everything else he did. Lets review some numbers and facts...
- Dirk in career elimination games is averaging 28.4ppg, 12.2rpg, 48%fg, 39%3pt
- Dirk is undefeated in game sevens with an average of 28ppg amd 15rpg.
- Dirk last year even dealing with his fiancee being sent to jail in the semis last year against the Nuggets put up 34.4ppg, 11.6rpg, 4apg, 52%fg, 39%3pt, 92%ft
He had his bad moments, but none as bad as LBJ or Kobe's and his is more over blown. He missed that FT in the finals of 2006, but people say he blew the last 4 games of that series?
Game 3: 20 pts
Game 4: 16 pts
Game 5: 20 points
Game 6: 30pts and 15 rebs
and then in the 2007 series against the warriors he still put up 20 and 10 (but was inefficient like hell and shot like 38%fg and 20+%3pt) BUT, his father was dealing with lung surgery at the time due to a life of smoking and Dirk called Germany during halftime of every game in that series
PROOF: http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/4094/a-...
20 and 10 with your father going through that is impressive.
Now with Kobe and LBJ
Kobe actually had more bad playoff moments than both combined
* 2000 finals (19ppg, 35%fg but had SHAQ)
* 2004 finals (22ppg, 35%fg, 17%3pt, 4TOs with Prince guarding him and he dealt with the rape case, BUT Dirk dealt with the father in 2007 which was worse and still produced more)
* 2006 vs Suns (Didn't take a shot in game 7 in the second half and lost)
* 2008 vs Celtics( poor)
Then LBJ
* 2007 finals (22ppg, 34%fg, 4TO's and low %s all over)
* 2010 semis (He had the pressure all on him from the media and everything and he did put up a triple double but had 9 TOs and 8-21).
So first off, Dirk's bad performance don't even come close to the other twos bad performances, and more often than not with extreme pressure he steps up (above Dirk numbers) and even when he went out this year he scored 33 points in the elimination game and also last year when he was going to be eliminated against the Nuggets in game 4 he had 44 points and 13 rebounds to go with 19 in the 4th alone.
I'm just saying, Dirk deals with adversity better than the other two under pressure.
I also didn't add in LeBron's bad game 6 against the Magic last year because he played well that series with no help. But Dirk is more trust worthy in an elimination game than him and Kobe.
If you aren't going to be brave enough to read the facts, why answer?
Missie: Your logic fails because Dirk's team didn't step up to help him and he performed way greater than Kobe did in the first round BUT Kobe had a TEAM that helped carry him to round two. He isn't even the MVP of his team so far. C'mon.
@ Kibby, I agree that LBJ steps up in big games and I don't think he chokes, but wouldn't you agree Dirk deals with pressure better than the other two? Look at the facts
@ Bball playa: Dirk had a good team, but they disappeared on him. Kidd, Terry and Marion all averaged 8-12 points and shot poor percentages. Kidd shot 28%, Terry shot 40% and Marion shot 35%. In game 6 Dirk had 33 points and the rest of the team had just 54. He didn't get enough help. Kind of like LBJ this year.
@ Nash fan, thanks, also Dirk's fiancée had like 11 aliases and was wanted for like dental work that she never payed for and she is like this con artist that dates rich people for money and whatever, so Dirk just left her in jail and they are not married. He moved on.

I agree that he gets lost in the shuffle because of the "KOBE/LEBRON" hype. What happens is that these two players have a few things in common:
They both are very agressive in the paint.
Kobe and Lebron are very "vocal" in their teams and the media loves that.
They pretty much enjoy the same kinds of things on and off the court because of similar backgrounds.
They are good and quick ball handler (no disrespect to Dirk) but he is not known as an "athletic" player.
People enjoy "flight acts" and "showmen" and they both can deliver that.
With all that being said, I stil think that Dirk is a more valuable player to a team, as long as he is surrounded with the right kind of players. He is missing a Steve Nash and a respectable Center. He does have ice water in his veins and does not back down from anyone. He is an incredible scorer and makes baskets from anywhere. He is great at the free throw line, especially for a tall man; however, he is lost under the shuffle because his team is not as good as he is and also because he is not "marketable" for the media.
Just wait until he gets a ring - and I hope that's soon... Then the media will come running and say that he is the best player and what not.
I saw game 7, yes! GAME 7 between the MAVS and the Spurs and I could see how this guy could score and carry his team. It's just that it didn't seem to me that he got any help from the officials or his team mates.
If this guy happens to go to a team where he can show what he really is, then we would see him deeper in the playoffs and the Finals.

i gree with all of that..lebron and kobe start jakkin up shot when they are under presure...the think aout kobe is that he can keep it kool even with 77 sec or less left but with the datails i agree..its obios (typo) that dirk doesnt get the credit he deserves and i dont know why,and that dirk stat saying dirk scored 16 isnt so impressive
btw
kobe is the mvp after the second round..before not so much but after the seecond round kobe is the mvp,if the lakers win pppl will say gasol is the mvp but its kobe bryant and in 206 he was sending a message to the lakers mangement and thats why he idint take a shot..the rape case is hard eventhough the father case is harder
so overall dirk is very underatted
but this year he had a good team too and he is eliminated so can you give me a reason (not argueing i just didnt watch the series that much exept in the gym treadmill

i red this and those are pretty good facts but i just want to point out somethings
you said dirk was dealing with his fathers illness and that trumps kobe's rape case. Well i disagree kobe's whole life would have been tooken from him for a long time
but back to the games alone when kobe was playing with shaq shaq never showed up for the away games and kobe did and even in the home games it was kobe
in game 7 vs the trail blazers kobe gets
25 pts 11 rebs 7 ast 4 blks (brought them back)
in game 4 vs the kings kobe gets
40 pts 16 rebs(close out game)
in game 5 vs the spurs kobe gets
35 pts(game winning shot) i was wrong he gave the final shot to horry and he missed so good game and great decision at the end but a bad miss
i will be back to this so iam not done have to go do something
EDIT
ok i got back to this question i was going close by saying dirk is one of the best at handleing pressure tho and i would like to have him on my team if we are in a elimanation game

That's interesting info there. I've never actually lined up all three players stats and compared them but it's interesting. Kobe had some horrific numbers in 2000 and 2004. I remember Tayshaun hounded him that whole series in 04'
I must admit even thinking years back Despite the Mavericks shortcomings in the playoffs as a team, Dirk has always remained consistent and a top performer in the playoffs. I think much of the problem is that most of the years (minus 2006) his supporting cast didn't quite step up their games as much as he did in the postseason.

I have no stats to show now but Lebron has almost always stepped up in big games. But the Cavs being one man show enables the other team to triple team him and he still finds people. If they made shots and kinda took some attention by the defenders, he would have played pretty good.
Still I can give the ball to Dirk or Kobe in the last minute, but I will certainly give it to Lebron in the last 4 minutes. He will perform pretty good. Plus he actually plays better on the road than at home.

I think he has dealt with a lot of personal issues than LeBron... may be Kobe's rape case was close. But LeBron has (in my eyes) to withstand a lot of defensive pressure on court and also he is also a center of attention(media etc) and in the playoffs he has had this 'choker', 'wanna be mj' names etc. I think Dirk also has that and I think he also have showed up and eaten the defense alive, but I just think LeBron's is more impressive to me. Plus I haven't watched Dirks career as close as LeBron's so it can go either way IMO.

LeBron,Dirk,Shaq and Kidd plus Jamison in Kidd all in 1 team and they will win the championship 4 times in a row
Well, atleast Dirk and LeBron to the Cavs and you have yourself a championship team

Wow, why was his fiance in jail, did he marry her? Kobe choked hard in 2000 and 2004 from looking at the stats you provided. What a choker lmao. Was he even the second option back then? Terrible numbers.. You forgot to mention how Kobe's field goal % always seems to drop in the post season.
Good arguments and points JM
