HI. I'm a professional writer and award-winning poet. I don't write poetry for money. I write it because it comes pouring out of my fingertips every day. It's not something I can really ignore or be more practical about. In fact, the best writing happens when logic is thrown out the window. I love Kafka's opening line of 'Metamorphosis' when he states simply that the lead character woke up and had changed into an insect. Just like that. No real explanation required. And that is a masterpiece of literature.

(Since I am in the arts, I have always supported myself by teaching. I suppose you could see that as being logical and pragmatic.)

Poetry isn't about having logic or lacking it. It's about a different way of writing. Sometimes novels aren't realistic either. For something to be considered realistic or not it really depends on the genre and the author of any type of literature.

If people were realistic they would all be poets, painters or musicians. Anything that expresses your soul is a thing of beauty and truth.

The people who aren't realistic are the crazy people destroying this earth such as politicians and these so called radical religious leaders who wish to start holy wars.

My degree is in science. I'm very logical. I've also an imagination and have written a few poems.

EDIT FOR RICHARD: I saw no need to expound. I have a BS in Biology (pre-med) then got my BSN. My minor was in chemistry. K?

I am a published poet and a prolific writer. Recognizing that poetry does not put bread on the table (or for that matter make it possible to periodically replace the table!), I also teach and tutor, run workshops in literature and writing, act as a corporate consultant and free-lance internet researcher, and do historical re-enactments. Those things do not make me less of a poet, but they do mark me as a person bent to pragmatism and reality. I think your view of how the world of writing works is perhaps one based more in stereotype than in reality. I live in the real world and write poetry there.

I wonder where "Peter" finds the time to do all that between being a "personal trainer" (or so he claims) to various people - most of them younger than him.

And I think you mean "do you agree", not "believe".

Unrealistic is just a nice way of saying dishonest.

We have religion to be dishonest. We don't need poetry for that.
