There is no certain answer, but the most popular theory is that the Devil took Marcellus' soul as the Devil takes souls from the back of the neck. The theory states that Jules and Vincent are after the briefcase that supposedly contains Marcellus' soul. This is just a mere theory as the contents of the briefcase is a MacGuffin. A lesser known theory is that Ving Rhames had an injury or a wound that cost him to put a band-aid on the back of his neck.

I don't think that he is the devil himself. I do think that Marcellus Wallace either sold or gave his soul to the devil. They say that the soul is the most beautiful thing that a person can see and it has a glow. They also say that you get the soul from the back of someone's head (hence, the band-aid). Another possiblity that I read about was that the item in the briefcase was the diamonds from 'Reservoir Dogs'. If you haven't seen it, that's a great flick.
