what would you suggest in violin solo?

I just received an itunes gift card and would like to purchase some solo violin works.

...or maybe viola or cello. I know that Bach pulled inspiration from some previous solo violin sonatas but I can't remember the composers name.

so minus the Bach which I obviously already have, what do you know of to augment my library?

Update:

Hopelessly literal. :D - I have the Ysaye but done by Kavakos...Vengerov is a great choice though.

oh and I have the Paganini too.

    Hi Switch!

How about Telemann's 12 Fantasias for solo violin? They might be worth considering.

    Here's a taste:

Difficult to know what to suggest, not knowing what you already have... so how about Ysaye's solo violin music... there is a really good version of the sonatas by Maxim Vengerov on an album called Vengerov plays Bach Shchedrin Ysaye

You must definitly consider Mozart's 5th Violin Concerto in A (Schirmer Edition is great! A movement from Tchaikovsky's would be great, too! The last movement is really really advanced but the first movement is great. The Beethoven is always wonderful.

I may be taking you hopelessly too literally -- for which I then promptly crave pardon -- but for solo violin wouldn't you have to consider the 6 Sonatas by Eugène Ysaÿe?

    Edit:

    Ok, literal it be <gg> : Bartok's Sonata of 1943 and Henze's of 1977?

All the very best, as ever,

Vocalise (Rachmaninoff) is a beautiful piece. When sung the performer chooses a vowel ("any vowel")

to use. If it's true that the fiddle is the instrument closest to the human voice, this would be a fine choice to play.
