Why did my female guppies die?

We bought a tank a month ago and made sure the water levels were fine by taking a sample into Petsmart. We were told the tank was fine so we bought 3 male guppies and they have done great. Three days ago we went back to petsmart and asked if it was alright to place female guppies in the tank and they also said it was alright as long as there are equal or more female guppies in the tank.

Well they have all died!!! I am so sad because I picked really pretty fish and I feel bad for removing them from there home just to die. :(

Does anyone know why they died or ideas? I plan on calling petsmart tomorrow but want any information possible on why they passed away.

What is suspect is that all three died in round about 3 days while all the males are okay?

Or did the males dies also?

If you still have the males and they are fine, it might be a stress issues or difference in water chemistry from the shop to the home tank.

If all your fish died then that suggests the tank somehow was not suitable for the fish, perhaps chlorine in the water or and out of balance ph. or you could have brought a batch of bad fish that then infected your tank.

If you can go into pet smart without phoning them and look very closely at the tank you bought from, often tanks will be marked out if the fish inside are being treated for white spot etc,

Personally I would look to buy in the future from a fishery or independent supplier, with pet smart are a big reputable company their advice and interest is only on a certain level. In an independent fishery you will find the staff friendly and only to happy to give you good free advice.

Look for local garden centres if not connected directly to one there should be one close by, usually.

Did you cycle the tank? Letting a tank sit for a month without adding ammonia doesn't do anything.
