The downfall of Detroit had nothing to do with local social policies.

It was caused by massive job losses due to outsourcing jobs from the automakers to Japan and other countries.

This created ripple effects that shut down businesses as workers left the city to seek work elsewhere. Grocery stores, departments stores, home improvement stores, eateries, every business lost business when the auto workers left town.

That's how to wreck an economy and turn a thriving city into a virtual ghost town.

And that's what Obama is allowing to happen all over the USA, in spite of his campaign pledge to reform free trade.

Political leaders in Detroit failed to diversify the economy, trusting too much in capitalism and national policies to fully sustain the auto industry. Many areas of the country right now are reeling for similar reasons, and it's certainly not limited to liberal areas. In fact, conservative states like Arizona and Oklamhoma face serious economic challenges. But, at least you admit that you're only looking for a political line (liberal social policies), so I'd admire how upfront you are about merely seeking to reinforce your narrow ignorance.

I think that the automakers that cut all the jobs are to blame for the city's downfall.

Then the government was dumb enough to hand them a bunch of money that just got sucked up by the UAW and never created any jobs.

I know some will say, Yes it is good for foreign car co's to come into the US, they create more jobs, but all they do is raise the price of their auto's, and Americans are paying their salary's when they buy one of the foreign owned car company vehicles. I think money that large should be invested in American Companies as to keep the money at home.

The cities downfall was due to the collapse of the auto industry, nothing more.

Umm, the manufactures, mainly auto, went downhill after foreign motors took the market share. So, really capitalism itself was the downfall. If you want to be broad about it.

there arent any cities in America that are "liberal". everything is either moderate or really conservative

The short answer is that Reagan lowered tariffs, so businesses left the US so they could find cheap labor and import their goods back..

the conservatives left, and the only people left in detroit were the poor, who usually are democrats
