It's not known for certain which chemical compound makes the urine smell. But based on your genetics.. your body breaks asparagus down in a certain way! Believe it or not asparagus doesn't affect everyone this way. But a certain chemical compound in the asparagus is broken down and eliminated through your urine. A smelly compound! :D

When your body breaks it down it produces methyl mercaptan, which is the same chemical which gives a skunk its defensive smell. Not everyone who eats it has this happen, only about 1/2 of the population. See more in the link provided !!
