When was the 4.5-billion-year age for earth first proposed?

I know it was after the first World War.

    Clair Patterson in 1953 after much testing of uranium/lead at Argonne Lab In Illinois put the age at 4.55 billion years +/- 70 million. After 200 years of wrong answers this one was accepted and is still accepted today.
