The thickness of lightening is actually as thick as a ball point pen. The massive amount of heat around the the bolt of lightening causes the air to expand. When the bolt is gone, the large column of air then shrinks back down to its normal size, this shrinking effect causes the rumbling noise.

It's basically like an explosion of air that you cannot see, that causes sound waves.

The lightning heats up the air which forces it to spread out as it is forced out it takes a while to travel and as the air is being pushed it makes the rumbling sound of thunder.

Echos! The greater away you're from the lightning the greater it echos. those all mixture and reason each and all of the rumbles and booms you pay attention. once you're close you purely pay attention the crack (the lightning itself) observed by using the loud develop that's the heated air increasing faster than the fee of sound.
