Where does the "Age of Accountability" come from?

I've heard pastors speak on it saying that children aren't responsible for their salvation until the age of 13, but I cannot find their source(s) in the Bible. Is this just a man-made myth?

It is man made and totally unsupported by scripture, but hey, who wants to picture babies burning in hell?

The Age of Accountability is not mentioned in the Bible. The concept is that a child shouldn't be held responsible for his actions and choices as far as Christianity until he is old enough to be accountable, which in my opinion is much younger than 13. I was old enough to know and make that decision at 6.

Anyway, everyone is born into sin, and is therefore condemned to hell from the start. Romans 10:9 says "That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." Cleary an infant cannot do this. A real "age of accountability" would seemingly be based on each individual, based on their maturity, but as soon a a child is able to know right from wrong, they are old enough to be accountable.

From Jewish tradition. Why all the thumbs down for correct answers? Sheesh people. That IS where it comes from, it may not be correct, but that's the source. Ever heard of Bar Mitzvahs and Bat Mitzvahs? Go ahead, give me a TD too if it makes you feel smart.

"Age of accountability" is traditions of men, that make the Word of God to no affect. Calvinists would say it doesn't matter, God chooses who's saved. Universalists would say God chose all to be saved. It's only in the Arminian camp that you find this.

It's not biblical per se, but the principle is that there comes a time when a young person or child is old enough to know right from wrong and is accountable for choices made.

It comes from the belief that infants, while having been born with "original sin" they had not COMMITTED sin and are covered by God's love, mercy and grace. Depending upon the age of the child it could range from 5-8 depending upon if they have begun to understand the difference between right and wrong.

It's one of those great opportunities to laugh at Bible-only Christians, since there's no mention of it in the Bible anywhere and the Bible-only ones are always trying to enforce it.

In between their Sinner's Prayer and Chick Tract Prayers, equally unbiblical.

  • I think it comes from the Jewish culture of boys becoming men at age 13.
