Let x = √(a-2). Then the equation becomes
x² - 11x + 30 = 0
(x - 5)(x - 6) = 0
x = 5 or x = 6
Substitute back in terms of a:
√(a - 2) = 5
a - 2 = 25
a = 27
√(a - 2) = 6
a - 2 = 36
a = 38
