I'm a junior in high school right now, and I'm interested in filmmaking, Lord of the Rings (well, obession better describes the first two), movies, and computers. I'm also a big tech geek. If you share any of my interests, or simply want to talk, feel free to contact me! Ha, it's been a while...I'm a freshman at Chapman University right now, pursuing my passion as a Film Production major.

  • Lick sweat residue in case of electrolyte loss?

I went on a 22 mile 4000' gain hike today in temperatures that were hotter than expected. I had a bottle of gatorade at the beginning, but by the time I reached the peak 4 hours in, I only had half a camelbak left and my entire body was crusted with salt. At this point, I was already feeling very dizzy and disoriented and I could feel my low blood pressure because I was almost blacking out when I stood up. I knew it was electrolyte loss, but since I didn't have salt or gatorade powder handy, I decided to collect as much salt from my skin as possible using my fingers and licked them off. I was able to get maybe an 1/8 of teaspoon of salt over the course of ten minutes, and a while later, I didn't feel as dizzy and started back down.

So my question is, has anyone else ever tried anything like this or heard of anyone doing it? Obviously there are commercial mixes and tablets available, but what happens if you don't have anything and you're really feeling woozy? Was that just placebo, or might it have actually done something? Looking forward to hearing your responses. Thanks!

  • Going to prom but my date is driving?

About a week ago, this girl called me up and asked me if I wanted to go to prom. We're basically going as friends. Anyway, I said yes, and I've gotten my tux and the tickets and flowers since then. The only thing now is, I don't have my driver's license, but she does. Is it weird if she drives us to dinner and prom? Has anyone done this before? Or should I just try to get her to carpool with some other people? We're going in a group of about 26 people by the way.

  • Where should I buy wholesale/OEM computer parts?

My friend and I own a computer business and one service we offer is building custom system. I've looked online and I know that Newegg and NewBiiz are both very cheap, but I read a review a guy left for a processor and he said that since he was a professional system builder, he was able to get that processor for a fraction of the price. Another guy confirmed, saying he got it for 1/4 of the retail price.

So my question is, where do I get wholesale/OEM parts that are drastically cheaper (i.e. more than 15%) off the retail price? Or how do we go about getting a professional system builder discount?

  • Lord of the Rings?

I just bought a Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition DVD signed by Alan Lee (he was one of the conceptual artists for the movie; it comes with a photo of the signing as well) for $65, free shipping on eBay. I know this isn't fake because I've bought a signed book from this guy before and his reputation is very good, I just don't know if I made a good deal or not. Is this a good deal?

  • How do I adjust bicycle handlebar height?

I've been looking everywhere online but can't find anything that has worked yet. There's a long hexagonal bolt at the top of the bike stem so I unscrewed that but the bars still won't budge. I've tried some WD-40 to lubricate it and it still won't move. What am I doing wrong? Am I unscrewing the wrong bolt? Help this is driving me crazy!

  • Where can I find a friggin' hanger bolt?

I'm trying to find a 3/8"-16 x 2-1/2" hanger bolt with a plain center. My local Tractor Supply store has them, but I am trying to buy them in bulk, in boxes of 50 or 100 so I can get them cheaper. The thing is, I can't find this kind *anywhere* online without having packages less than 900. Is there another name for hanger bolts (and specifically hanger bolts, not dowel screws or rail bolts)? This is driving me nucking futs! Any help is appreciated!

  • What should I say? Leaving a message?

I just called a local production company about a possible internship opportunity but the answering machine was on. But the thing is, the guys who own the company are brothers and both of their last names are Monahan. So what should I say? Hi Mr. Monahan? Mr. Monahans? Hello Mr. Joe and Pat Monahan? None seem right.

Also, should I even leave a message in the first place? Isn't there some "rule" that says it's rude to have people call you back when you should call them back instead? I know this all sounds trivial and downright dumb, but I don't want to screw up my first impression! Thanks!

  • Dubya tea eff!?! Sleep deprivation is good for you?

First off, let me say that I am really frustrated. LIterally about 24-26 days out of a month I am extremely tired. If I go to bed at 10:30 or 11 and wake up at 6:45, I'm deathly tired. On weekends, with no alarm, I go to bed at 11-11:30, I wake up around 9:30-10 the next morning, and I'm really groggy the whole day. However, last week I had to tape our school's musical so I didn't get home until 11:30 or later each night, and ended up going to bed at around 12. I still woke up at 6:45 the next day, but for some reason, I wasn't tired at all and was even hyper. Then last night, I went to bed at 1AM, woke up this morning thinking it was 10 or 11, and realized it was actually 8:30. WTF?

So I guess this means less sleep is good for you (me)? But then why does it depend on when you go to bed? If I go to bed early, I sleep longer (even with no alarm) and I'm still tired. If I stay up late, I sleep less (again, no alarm), yet I'm oddly energetic. Can somebody please explain!? Thanks!

  • Does the Rode SM3 shockmount mount to boompoles and what thread does it have?

Does it have a 3/8" or 5/8" thread? Also, does it mount to a pole directly out of the box, or is there a part that needs to be removed/added? Also, has anyone had problems with the shoe mount? Thanks!

  • Playing isos on PSP? Help!?

I recently got a PSP as a gift while visiting China. I don't have any UMDs for it, but I do have a gi-normous 4 GB Memory Stick. The problem is, I downloaded Harry Potter 5 and put it into the iso folder (and it is an .iso), but it won't work. The system recognizes it and I can start it up to the PSP logo, but then the errors come up saying "The game could not start" and 80020148 or 8002321_? (I can't remember what the second one was exactly). The thing is, I'm not really sure what firmware I'm using. It says 3100EA-R+, and I googled it and it seems like it's some kind of Asian firmware. Also, I checked everything in Recovery mode (so I guess it is a custom firmware?), and tried toggling the settings back and forth but none would work. I also tried putting the iso into GAME, GAME150, and GAME350 but that didn't work either. I'm new to all of this, so if someone could please help, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

  • Does anyone have any suggestions? I dented my wall and need a quick fix.?

So I was nailing pictures to the wall in my room, and I accidentally dented the wall. We live in an apartment, so I was wondering if anyone has any ideas that I could fix up the wall quickly, i.e. filling the dent with some kind of paste and painting over it. Is this even possible? Thanks!

  • How can I keep my lens clean?

I've used several different types of lens cleaners including ones for multicoated surfaces, and they all seem to leave residue. Also, I've used several different types of cloths as well, some made for glasses and some made for lenses, and no matter what there's always dust or lint on it. What's the best cleaner, cloth, and/or trick to get and keep a lens super-clean? Thanks!

  • I'm starting a business with my friend. How much should we charge?

My friend and I are both sophomores in high school, and we are starting a photography/video production business. As of now, it's not official (i.e. paperwork, registration, etc.), but we plan to make it later. But that's not the problem though. We're planning to shoot at one of my friend's party's and have his mom (who wanted to pay us last time we shot at his party), to distribute our business cards instead of paying us. However, the problem is, if we actually get clients, how much do we charge? We were thinking of having them set the price, or even doing it for free in the beginning to build a reputation, however in both these cases, there's a chance of loss on our part. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

  • Can't connect to other computer in home network!?

So here's the problem. I have two computers both running Xp SP2, and I'm trying to use an ethernet connection and router to connect them for networking. I ran the network setup on the host computer (the one whose files I'm trying to access), and then the other one. I go into network connections on my newer computer (not the host), it has a folder saying shared documents on Intel(editingstation), which is that computer itself. Then click on entire network, and it shows the workgroup, I click on that, and it shows the Intel (not host) and the AMD (host). However, I can only click and open the Intel computer, and whenever I try to access the host computer (AMD), it always fails. All the above was when I was on the non-host computer. On the host, I can't even see the other computer, or itself. Also, I am getting Internet on the Intel, so that means that it is not a physical problem. Can anyone please help? Thanks!

  • Why does my coffee taste weird?

So I opened up this bag of coffee about two weeks ago, and when I made a cup, it tasted great. It was bitter, but not the usual cheap-$5-coffee-thats-been-sitting-out-for-5-hours-bitter; I could actually get used to it (but I put sugar and cream in it anyways). Now every time I make a cup, it tastes a little more like the unpleasant bitterness, and it's starting to get kind of acidic too. Does this have to do with the bag the coffee is stored in (not airtight), or is it just me because I'm getting used to the taste? I've been brewing it the same way everytime, 6oz to a cup.

  • Can you figure this out and explain if possible?

A car of weight 2720 N operating at a rate of 156 Kw develops a maximum speed of 31 m/s on a level, horizontal road.

Assuming that the resistive force (due to friction and air resistance) remains constant, what is the car's maximum speed on an incline of 1 in 20, i.e. if @ (theta) is the angle of the incline with the horizontal, sin @ = 1/20? Answer in units of m/s

A 172 kg crate is pulled along a level surface by an engine. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the crate and the surface is 0.496. The acceleration of gravity is 9.8 m/s2

How much power must the engine deliver to move the crate at a constant speed of 7.53 m/s? Answer in units of watts.

  • Why are there suddenly a lot of questions about indie films?

Why are there so many questions about making indie films recently? I mean lately I've been seeing one or two questions about how to make indie films or something like that everyday. Is there some kind of huge film festival that I'm missing or something?
