What should I say? Leaving a message?
I just called a local production company about a possible internship opportunity but the answering machine was on. But the thing is, the guys who own the company are brothers and both of their last names are Monahan. So what should I say? Hi Mr. Monahan? Mr. Monahans? Hello Mr. Joe and Pat Monahan? None seem right.
Also, should I even leave a message in the first place? Isn't there some "rule" that says it's rude to have people call you back when you should call them back instead? I know this all sounds trivial and downright dumb, but I don't want to screw up my first impression! Thanks!
Thanks for your help, but I dunno, it just sounds too casual. I have no problem being casual, but I don't want my first impression to be like "Hey, Monahan Brothers, call me up sometime, okay?"
Well obviously not like *that* but you get the point. Maybe I won't say their names at all.

I would say "Hello, this message is for Mr. Pat or Joe Monahan...." and then so on...
Just my opinion. :-) Good luck with the internship.

My name is Your Name, and I was calling to speak with Joe Monahan or Pat Monahan regarding an internship with Company Name. As you're out of the office at present, I'll try back another time. In the meantime, you're welcome to check out my work at yourwebsite dot com. Thanks.
(Obviously the last part may be irrelevant, but it's a pretty good idea to mention just one of your many wonderful qualifications.)
*I wanted to add that it's important to be brief. As a former receptionist, I can tell you nothing makes a poorer impression than a rambling message or one that goes on long after the salient information has been communicated.
Hope that helps. Good luck.

Greet each man separately (Hello, Mr. Monahan and Mr. Monahan...) as if they had different last names and leave a message about what you are looking for then state you will call back. That gives them a heads up that you are looking for an internship and if they need any information, they can get it ready.

just greet, identify yourself, short explanation of why you are calling and your contact number.
they have a voicemail for a reason so its okay to have them call you back.
