Christians what is the difference in religions and cults?

I have been watching a trial(In Session) about parents of a 16 year old boy letting their son die because they believed in faith healing. This church is called the followers of Christ out of Oregon, they said today the preacher that started this church died in 1960 and no one can be baptized into the church but must be born into it. That sounds like a cult to me. What do you think?

Sounds contrary to the Bible. People are born again by receiving Christ, born into Christianity. Not a physical birth but a spiritual one. No one is even baptized into a church, much less born into one. Churches make mistakes, and this is clearly one. Revelations speaks about churches making mistakes. This doesn't mean that people won't find Christ by attending that church. It is sad that the teen died from negligence. I heard a pastor on tv say once, don't sit in bed with a flu and pray for a miracle, take your medication and pray for a speedy recovery. When all else fails then you pray for a miracle, regardless pray constantly and don't be a fool. Well, it is also sad that the pastor was leading people astray by convincing them they had to be born in the church; kinda cultish. Also, all religions contrary to the teachings of the Bible is formed from the spirit of the anti-christ. So, I guess a cult is just a smaller version of a religion that doesn't follow the Bible.

Yep - most definitely. Cults carry the distinction of claiming that "We're the one , true, church" or "only we have the truth". All of this is usually "punctuated" with lots of "dos and don'ts" (legalism) and the person or member, who violates these rules, is isolated from the rest of the flock, in the form of "disfellowshipping" or "shunning". Cults work by employing toxic shame - that is they use plenty of guilt and shame to manipulate people with. The underlying message in this approach to the victim is "you ARE a mistake" - instead of a healthy message being conveyed of " I am a human being and I make mistakes". Cults are GRACELESS but centred on their leader or leaders opposed to Jesus Christ as the one leader, whereby, membership has their, own, relationship with God. Run as fast and as far away from this Cult, as best as you can.

A cult is any religion that hasn't yet received tax exempt status.

Yea the church does heaps of charity work, telling all those Africans that condoms are evil in the middle of an AIDS epidemic, raping children and such. Truly noble men.

It sounds like hooey, but not necessarily like a cult. I associate cults with actual physical attempts to control its members--keeping them malnourished, preventing them from sleeping, imprisoning them in some way, isolating them from family and friends. Feeding them a line of bull and being exclusionary aren't quite enough.

The first group has had large enough followers thus undeservingly got respect.
