Community College or Virginia Tech?

I'm a high school senior and I graduate in about a month. In December, I got accepted to Virginia Tech. I currently live in Florida. My father is in the military so I have moved around a lot throughout my life. I really enjoy where I live right now and I don't want to leave my friends. There is a local state college that offers a degree in criminal justice, which is what I want. Virginia Tech doesn't offer that. Recently, I have thought about giving up Virginia Tech to stay here because I just don't want to leave. I don't think that there will be a difference in education but my parents disagree and say that I'm basically throwing away my future by staying here. They are also moving to Rhode Island. I know that I want to stay, but they say they will support me but think I am making a mistake. I would just like to have an opinion about the entire situation. Thank you

    Hello!

Congratulations on your graduation. I know that it is difficult to make these decisions and sounds like you have found a nice place to live and friends that you care about. I don't know if your friends will be going to the local community college or if they have other plans.

After high school, things change. People say one thing and then it changes. Sometimes, it is very hard to keep your high school friends after they have moved on...even if it is working at Starbucks. :)

I suggest that you talk with a counselor at your high school or a counselor through your medical provider. Since your dad is in the military, you should have The TRICARE benefit. I think you'll benefit with meeting with someone 'neutral' to talk about the pro's and con's and what is best for you.

Your parents sound wonderful and supportive. I know that they want what is best for you. As you know, VA Tech is an outstanding school. I don't know if you visited the campus. It has a strong residential program and the students do form good connections.

No matter what you decide, your heart may pull at you. And you should know that all freshmen have some type of 'regret' about going away to college, their major, and starting out again.

My best to you. Good luck!
