where in the world would you go?

My son came home with an interesting extra credit assignment for History that got me to thinking....

The assignment... you have access to a time machine that will transport you to anywhere in time. You will only be an observer, not a participant. Pick a time or period, and location from anything we have studied through the year. Explain where you are going, and why you would like to observe the event(s) and what is going on and why you are interested.

(This is from a World History class and studied world history from the 1500's to modern day. I thought this to be a great history assignment, and though I am not helping my son, it got me to thinking about where I would go, and how I would approach this topic. Thought it would be a great discussion topic for answers.... So where in the world would you go?

Update:

since American history is part of World History, my first stop would be from the debates leading to the Declaration of Independence through the writing of the American Constitution. I think the founding of a new nation, coming together from many different points of view, but all based on the founding of a brand new nation, would be incredibly interesting. And I suspect we would find many of today's debate was going on then as well.

I'd go to the UK in the 1870s and 80s - Empire-building and reform ftw!

Ooh! I love questions like this, but it's also hard to decide.

I'd like to see the life and times of Jesus Christ, to help me understand my religion more.

I'd also like to go back to the French Revolution because that's always struck me as such a dramatic and exciting time.

Being a Les Miserables nerd, this one is obvious: June 5 & 6, 1832 in Paris, to see all those rather attractive Frenchboys and the barricade. :)
