My Doctor wants to put me on Prozac?

I'm a 16 year old girl and went to the doctor today for chest pains, I suppose you could call them. I was then promptly sent over to a Psychiatrist and diagnosed with some kind of anxiety. I don't remember the type. Anyway, they want to put me on Prozac. I've been researching some opinions on this drug, and the majority seem to hate it. My 7 year old cousin was put on Prozac and it really messed him up. So much that he had to be admitted into a Children's Mental Hospital. It also caused him to gain weight. I really don't know what to do. I mean, my parents already told my doctor that it was alright and to put me on it. I just don't want to end up dead in a bloody bathtub because some half-assed doctor wants to make it to their lunch so they give me whatever seems generally plausible. All I went to the DOCTOR for was to get rid of these stupid chest pains. They hurt like hell. Ffs, I can't even sleep! Yet I come out with a mental disease and some drug that's probable to make me worse. -sighs- Okay, I'm sorry. Back to the topic at hand. Have you been on Prozac? And if you have, was it a positive experience? A negative one? Have any of your loved ones been on it? Or are you a Doctor that knows about it? I feel like I'm rambling. Anyway, any and all information will be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you!

Update:

Yeah, I started hyperventilating in her office, actually. I was extremely nervous and just very worried. But I was thinking the same thing. How could you tell if I was depressed and needed something extremely powerful to help me by just one visit? It was hardly a talk. I did cry, but again, it was the nervousness. Blegh. Thank you all for answering though. I truly do appreciate it. :]

If a psychiatrist put you on Prozac after a single visit there is something seriously wrong. Could it be that you seemed depressed or irritable because your chest hurt? Was it a one-time thing, or do your parents complain about your mood? I would recommend seeing a psychologist (one that isn't allowed to hand out drugs) a few times before taking Prozac to get a second opinion. Even if you are depressed or have a psych. disorder, you should try cutting out all processed foods from your diet and getting more aerobic exercise before going on the medication. Prozac should be a last resort because, as you seem to know, it is a powerful drug that can really mess people up.

I hate prozac. I used to work at a mental health place. The ONLY way our psychiatrist would use prozac on a patient was if they'd been on it in the past, liked it, and asked him to do it. the stuff was put on the market before you were born, sweetie. it was THE FIRST SSRI. It also causes frequent problems like your cousin had because it's NOT INDICATED FOR CHILDREN.

This is where you have to be decisive. If you take it, take it. Don't take it for a few days and second guess yourself. Then, it'll really mess you up for sure.

If you are NOT going to take it, tell your mom and dad. Tell them you will take something, but that you looked it up and prozac can cause suicidal tendancies in children and teens. (which it can) and that you want something else. Cymbalta and lexipro are good for anxiety. I'm not sure if they're indicated for teens though. There are newer meds out there tho that have fewer side effects.

They can totally accurately diagnose anxiety in one visit, hon. I had my first panic attack at 14 or 15. It does make you feel like your chest is gonna explode or something. People mistake it for chest pains because they feel like they're anxious because their chest hurts, not that they were anxious and the pain came AFTER the anxiety.

i went to the doctors for fainting all the time, and i came out with an anxiety disorder...so i know where your coming from, but honestly after taking medication for about a year now i feel like a whole new girl, and i find that i have lost weight rather than gaining because i feel better and i feel motivated more often, so i work out and get things done. I wouldn't be scared of taking them, you may feel off and sleepy for a few weeks but give it a month and if you dint feel right on it they can Always switch you, im taking celexa now and its made the world of difference. And don't worry your not going to end up killing yourself or being depressed, you ll be just fine and i promise this is a good thing and will help you in the long run, because i really didn't think i had an anxiety disorder until i started taking medication and like i said im a whole new women now.

Personally I would really consider all the effects even the more rare like horrifying dreams, suicidal thoughts and convulsions. I know your Dr recommended it but there are other non medical options - have you tried diet and massage therapy? Pills can cause permanent problems when all you need is a little help to get over a short term one. I have seen the effects of Prozac and it can be both good and devastating. I encourage you to look at alternative therapies and only use chemicals as a last effort. Good Luck!

If the chest pains are caused by anxiety, medication can help. You are right on the borderline of being old enough to take it. 7 year olds should *never* take it, it is *completely* inappropriate for children.

You can start on a low dose of Prozac and see if you feel any less anxious. You may need to try other medications such as Paxil or Effexor. Our oldest daughter, now 25, tried the SSRI drugs (Prozac, Paxil, Lexapro) and they didn't help her but Effexor did and now she lives free of the anxiety she had.

    Wishing you well.

prozac was a bad experence for me but it works great for my mom. try it and if you knowtice that things are getting worse on it tell you parents and stop taking it. and your parents CANT make you take ANYTHING that YOU dont want to take because its you that swallows the pill so remember that.
