Question about Pride and Prejudice?
When Lydia runs away with Mr. Wickham, the whole family starts freaking out when they consider the fact that they might not get married. There are quotes such as "Lydia will be lost forever." I don't understand exactly what they expect will happen to her. Do they expect her to marry the wrong man or is not getting married just some social faux pas? Someone please help me!

They expect her to have sex outside marriage and be "discarded" by Mr Wickham afterwards. In the 1800's sex before marriage was the greatest shame a person could bring upon their family.
Lydia being lost forever just means that society will shun her.

during Austen's time period and the period of Pride and Prejudice having an acceptable marriage was a must. Lydia's choice to run off and elope with Mr. Wickham could have seriously hurt her social standing, and then in turn the rest of the Bennet's social standing. It would have been worse if she hadn't have married him. It was all about being sociably acceptable.

becouse in the begging of the book Mr. Darcy is prejudice( unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason) of Elizabeth family. Afterward and becouse of it Elizabeth is too Pride(full) to confess her felling to Mr.Darcy. P.S. I was going back over the other question, I think, it's kinda cool that were one who has read or seen the many movies(mini series) has there own personal idea who is Pride and who is Prejudice. This has actually given me an idea for a question, I how you don't mind.

Not just sex outside of marriage is socially unacceptable but that she left home to be with this man means she can never come home to her place in the family again. She will be lost to family for not just the sexual aspect but for choosing to soil her and her family's reputation for carrying on in such a manner by living with a man unmarried. Both choices were socially unacceptable during that time period.

She has run away with a man and NOT married him. This will destroy the family reputation and no respectable man will be willing to make an offer of marriage to the other sisters.

yeah- your're sorta on track. if i remember right, i think that in the novel, getting married implied that you'd move away. and it had more to do with the social faux pas than the wrong man. even though mr. wickham was not the greatest choice for a husband, her parents financially needed her off their hands so they could marry the next one =]

A writer - Sex before marriage should STILL be a shame. And people wonder why we have all these STD's.. there'd be a whole heck of a lot less if people just waited til they were married, I garuntee it.
