War Game - South vs North Korea. Suppose S Korea decided to end the Korean division once and for all?
With the Cheonan sinking being the last straw, suppose South Korea decided to conquer North Korea and "liberate" its long-suffering people. What are plausible ways such a war can play out?
My take: first China would be pursuaded to ditch its mutual defense treaty with NK, possibly in return for the US leaving unified Korea. S Korea would heavily bomb the artillery pointed at Seoul, and try amphibious landings behind the DMZ to encircle the bulk of NK forces. NK, being technologically outmatched, folds after initial fierce fighting. Resistance continues for a while by fanatical NK supporters but is overcome. A fortune is then spent in subsequent reconstruction of the dilapidated North.
BTW, what percent of the SK population would accept or even welcome forcible reunification with the North at this time?

It is past time.
China, Russia, Japan and the US should join forces and rid the world of this nut. How long do we have to waste money and lives on insane people?
It is time for rational nations to act!

Your concept has a minor problem... China does not have a mutual defense alliance with North Korea. They share a border and China is sensitive to anything that might impact their border. China is also a member of the Pan Asian Alliance and is involved in maintaining the peace on the Korean Peninsula.
Beyond that, I doubt South Korea wants to unify. They are riding a major economic wave, while the north is a wasteland of ruin and despair. Taking over the north means South Korea would inherit the poorest and most destitute country in Asia.
It just isn't worth the trouble.

No, the UN will just sanction North Korea, and NK will just continue with what it has been doing.
