What are some irreversible temperature chemical indicators?
1 AnswerChemistry6 years agoHow do chemical heat/cold detectors work?
How do chemical detectors that react upon being exposed to temperatures above or below a pre-set threshold work? Often found on the outside of temperature-sensitive shipping containers, the reaction causes a change in the color of the material. Some setups have the color change being permanent, in order to check for temperature continuity during the course of shipping. Are their liquids that react in similar fashion? In a separate note, what are some reactions that can be used for various given temperatures?
1 AnswerChemistry8 years agoCan a third party, such as a bank, distribute Google Chrome extensions to only its customers?
I'm thinking of how a bank could use such as a treat for its customers, rather than releasing it to everybody through the Chrome Web Store.
1 AnswerGoogle8 years agoAre there paid Safari extensions? Google Chrome extensions?
I am interested in developing an extension or two, but I will need to be paid something for my efforts (something like $0.99/copy). But is such something that is common or popular? How much can a developer expect to make? Or are basically all such extensions free to download?
2 AnswersSoftware9 years agoDelta 275 Anchorage unplanned stops?
On the web-based delta flight tracker, this morning DL 275 (DTW-NRT) was reported to have diverted to Anchorage (ANC). The flight scheduled for this afternoon also had Anchorage listed as the initial destination. Are the diversions due to the ongoing heat wave, which means less lift at takeoff thereby limiting fuel load that can be carried upon takeoff at DTW, or something else?
1 AnswerAircraft9 years agoWar game - possible "liberation" of North Korea followup?
With the latest artillery shelling of South Korean controlled islands, THIS (or maybe something in the future) possibly being the last straw, suppose South Korea decides to forcefully "liberate" North Korea. Since the bulk of NK forces are located near the DMZ, it seems like they are vulnerable to encirclement from the rear. What areas of NK are vulnerable to an amphibious assault from SK Marines?
2 AnswersMilitary1 decade agoWar Game - South vs North Korea. Suppose S Korea decided to end the Korean division once and for all?
With the Cheonan sinking being the last straw, suppose South Korea decided to conquer North Korea and "liberate" its long-suffering people. What are plausible ways such a war can play out?
My take: first China would be pursuaded to ditch its mutual defense treaty with NK, possibly in return for the US leaving unified Korea. S Korea would heavily bomb the artillery pointed at Seoul, and try amphibious landings behind the DMZ to encircle the bulk of NK forces. NK, being technologically outmatched, folds after initial fierce fighting. Resistance continues for a while by fanatical NK supporters but is overcome. A fortune is then spent in subsequent reconstruction of the dilapidated North.
BTW, what percent of the SK population would accept or even welcome forcible reunification with the North at this time?
3 AnswersMilitary1 decade agoWhat is the point of US Carriers' Tokyo hub?
After all, if the people they gather there for the most part are headed to other (Asian) destinations anyway from the US, then couldn't they simply have the international flights originate at a US hub? For instance, in the case of Delta, they could have a bunch of international departures all leaving Atlanta (or perhaps Detroit) to say Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore, Taipei, Manila, and so forth and skipping a stop.

Also, are diffusion effects responsible for the sometimes "smiling" bands, as well as bands spreading out?
2 AnswersBiology1 decade agoWhat should I do if I find a dog that's obviously lost? I don't know it, so how can I keep from being bitten?
I saw this dog missing its collar this morning on the way to work, and wanted to help it. But since I don't know it, it seemed somewhat scared of me, and I of it. Should I just call animal control, or are there alternatives?
4 AnswersDogs1 decade agoOn a hot (>90 F) day, what temperature air should the air conditioner on a 1997 Toyota 4Runner output?
My 4Runner seems to be having trouble cooling its interior on hot days, and I want to know if there is a problem with the system before taking it in for service.
2 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs1 decade agoHow low a temperature would an anhydrous calcium chloride work desiccator work at?
There is a freezer that collects frost over time; if the air within it can be kept dry, the frost buildup would be minimized.
1 AnswerChemistry1 decade agoGeneric ethics question: what is an ethical level of risk to accept, and what is not?
Obviously some risk-taking is required to live; otherwise we can't even cross the street without risking getting hit by a car. Now, let's say something has a 0.1% chance of killing oneself each time it's performed. Is performing it wrong because of the risk? What if the chance were 99%? Then it probably would be wrong, unless the action were extremely unusual. So what is an ethical, acceptable level of risk and why?

I have one that runs, and seems to work, but I don't know if it's supposed to dry the air that slowly.
4 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs1 decade agoIs there a php script that takes a URL, and then tells the script whether the URL should be read or not?
This is with regard to complying with the robots exclusion standard (robots.txt) that a site may have. I'm trying to write a compliant bot, FWIW.

What would happen if someone say drove a 20 kHz transducer at 60 kHz? Would the efficiency be poor, and/or cause the transducer to burn out?
