The House on Mango Street?
I am writing a thesis paper for The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. I am having trouble thinking of an argument on which to base my thesis statement. It is for a college literature/composition class. Could someone could think of an argument I can make about the book or come up with an intriguing thesis topic or the statement itself? The ten points goes to the person whose idea I use.

It's been a while since I read it, but I studied it in college as well. I remember that the focus of my analysis was Esperanza, and it was two-fold.
First I argued that she was at a pivotal point in her young adult-hood, and that she was "finding herself" and deciding what sort of a person she was. In my mind, she was in that phase between child and adult, and was starting to see beyond the surface of some things.
Second - and just as important - I said that the other women in the story were sort-of symbolic of the different "avenues" she could take in her life. I don't have the book in front of me, but I remember, for example, Alice, who had a hard life but was taking classes in school and working during the day. Esperanza saw this and realized that Alice had a difficult time, but also that she was trying to make her life better. I remember looking at all of the women in the book and their specific circumstances, and talking about how they were symbolic of the different possibilities for Esperanza's future, depending on the choices she made.
Good luck and I hope this gives you some ideas : )
