How important is Victoria Day in Canada?

What provinces celebrate this holiday the most?

Is this a special Victoria Day because it is ON May 24th itself? (isn't it on the Monday on or before May 24th, and today it IS 24th?

How long has this holiday been celebrated in Canada?

Do the French Canadiens honour this day eventhough it's an Anglophone-ish holiday?

Would Quebecois agree to celebrate Victoria Day if it means the Habs will win tonight against Philadelphia in NHL hockey?

Update:

Also Victoria Beach, Manitoba on Victoria Day? is it a fireworks show there?

Victoria Day is a Federal holiday, which means its a statutory day off across all of Canada. It has been celebrated since before Canada was an official country in honour of Queen Victoria's birthday....Its always on the Monday before/on the 24th. It is ALSO considered the unofficial start of summer and the end of the Winter social season...VD became an actual holiday in 1845.

For most Canadians these days, it is a celebration of the start of summer. Its usually the first long weekend with nice weather, time to get things in order in your yard, open up your cottage for the year, take the boat out or make that first camping trip. I don't think you will find many of us sitting round, toasting the Queen or discussing her.....its a weekend of family, friends, fun and activities. Who wouldn't celebrat that?

And yes, it is also celebrated in Quebec, but called Fete de la Reine obviously.

I dislike how you assume every Quebecois is automatically a Habs fan.....

Canada would not actually have a President. Why should be celebrate President's Day? In Ontario, we've a visit immediately called family members Day. it really is a visit in effortless words for the sake of having a visit in February.

It's a well-beloved holiday. Also known as the "May 2-4 weekend" and a 24 pack of beer has to be consumed in each household (if you believe that, I know a bridge you'd love to buy! :-D )

It's the unofficial start of summer (even though summer isn't here until June 21st).

The holiday has a different name in Quebec.

It the unofficial start of summer - that's the long weekend when everyone goes away somewhere.

It's usually on the nearest Monday to May 24, so everyone gets a long weekend.

It's celebrated across Canada. Some places have fireworks, others have parades.

All it is is a long weekend really, we don't really pay too much attention to why it is a holiday.

All we care about is a long weekend at the beginning of summer (or if you're in Alberta... it seems to always snow or be cold on May Long... it's a sharp reminder is only temporarily leaving you... she bows her ugly head one more time so you will never forget)

It amazes me how Canadians have dumbed down. It shows that regardless of age, we have forgotten what the day represents. Even Old Lady has bought into the kick off of summer. If she would go back in time, and remember what she learned in school, it has absolutely nothing to do with summer.
