How do I melee a bear in Red Dead Redemption?

Shoot it once with a repeater and then knife it. Only the "kill shot" has to be with the knife.

It's alot easier to get a team for that. Take turns on who gets the challenge and whoever's turn it is attacks the bear last. My brother had a team of 5 and they kept pummeling that thing and they killed it with melee attacks but only the last guy survived.

Yeah, just shoot him a few times in the legs with a low powered gun and then finish him off with the knife. I tried to take on a grizzly with the knife alone and got my butt handed to me. I actually got really lucky on my second attempt. He was in the river and they cannot fight well at all in the water. I took him down with the knife and didn't lose any health at all. Of course the chances of running up on one in the river is probably slim.

i just kept running around and usin the knife when he got tired. try shooting him in the legs 2 times then use the knife. it took me like 10 swings to take him down but it should take less if u shoot him first. be carefull tho... once u kill one it seems more start coming after u. i had to fight of 3 bears after i killed the one i needed for the challenge. they killed my horse and there was no way i was goin to outrun them. i suggest u get a camp ready after u skin the first one and save it then travel to blackwater.

stay on your horse at first, i did this alone, the bear will attack your horse first.
