Get way down on the floor (dog level), have someone turn on the vacuum, the amplify the sound by as much as 100,000 Hz - and there is your answer.

Source(s): Dogs detect sounds as low as the 16 to 20 Hz frequency range (compared to 20 to 70 Hz for humans) and as high as 70,000 to 100,000 Hz (compared to 20,000 Hz for humans), and in addition have a degree of ear mobility that helps them to rapidly pinpoint the exact location of a sound. http://www.dogfacts.org/hearing-dog-facts.htm

Maybe dogs think the vacuum is growling at them or they don't like the noise. They could also sense that something could hurt them or someone else because it can hurt if you roll over a foot/paw with the vacuum on. They have no problem with the vacuum when its off though. For now my dog is just afraid of the vacuum because shes still a puppy. :3

My dogs are not afraid of vacuums. To get them used to the noise I would vacuum 3 times a day when they were puppies. I am sure my neighbors thought I was nuts but it worked.

I think most dogs just don't like the noise. Especially in older vacuums, there is typically that high pitched whine sound that probably bothers dogs more than humans.

I don't think they're really afraid of the vacuum. Maybe it's just the strange loud noise. Every dogs have different fears.

When I get a new puppy, I carry them under my arm when I use the vacuum cleaner. Unfortunately with my last puppy I was so convinced that she had been acclimatised to the vacuum by the breeder that I failed to do this. Consequently she was afraid of the vacuum forever.

If your dog is still small enough to carry and tuck under your arm when you vacuum, I think that your might allay her fears.

We had a Belgian Shepherd that loved to get vacuumed,

when ever my wife turned the vacuum on, he cam running to her.

She used a vacuum with a hose, not the "floor model"

Dogs are bothered by all high pitched noises. Vacuums, rifles, fireworks, they just don't like high pitched sounds.
