Eurorail question/France.Switzerland/Italy?

There are three of us traveling from the following places.

1 Paris-Dijon (one day of travel)

2 Dijon-Montreux, Switzerland (one day of travel)

3 Montreux-Lugano(one day of travel)

4 Lugano-Varenna(lake como) one day of travel)

5 Varenna to Milan, Italy(one day of travel.

Right now Eurorail is offering a 3 for 2 saver pass for three people(3 of us are all traveling together.) for 768.00 usd. Is it cheaper to buy point to point tickets and get 2nd class for three people or buy the 3 country saver pass 3 for 2 deal for 768.00 for 3 people 5 days in 3 countries? Also if you know how I can travel to these places for cheaper could you let me know. ie buying point to point tickets in the train station when there.

You might find this site useful for determining whether a Eurail pass has value for you. http://www.seat61.com/Railpass.htm and it has links to the various national train websites where you can price the individual tickets.

It's likely that it would be cheaper to buy individual tickets for this trip. The price of an individual 2nd class ticket to Milan is 5.10 € (approximately $6.40). It is definitely not cost effective to have a pass for this leg of the trip. http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/homepage_en.html

Lugano to Varenna is not the easiest trip by train - it takes about 3 hours. You would need to change trains in Chiasso and Monza. The Lugano to Chiasso leg costs 9.60 swiss francs per person (6.73 euro; $8.26). The Chiasso to Varenna part of the trip costs 6 euro per person in 2nd class. Again, using a pass for this is not a good value. http://www.sbb.ch/en/index.htm

Montreaux to Lugano costs 119 CHF per person if you take the trains that connect in Morges and Zurich (83.46 euro; $102.43).

Dijon to Montreaux costs 78.60 CHF per person on the option with the fewest train changes (via Laussane - 55.14 euro; $67.64)

Depending on the train you take, Paris to Dijon is 39.20 euro ($48.16; the TER regional trains) to 44.20 (TGV) per person http://www.sncf.com/en_EN/flash/

The individual ticket total cost of the trip for three people is 3 x ($48.16 + $67.64 + $102.43 + 15.64 + 6.40) = $720.81. The individual tickets are cheaper even if you don't consider the supplement you would have to pay for some trains when using the pass. http://www.eurail.com/eurail-reservations-suppleme... , http://www.eurail.com/eurail-reservations-suppleme...
