How do i find out if a house that is for sale has been flooded before?

not if it is on a flood plane but if it has actually flooded

I am scheduled to visit it friday, but on a drive by there was carpet hanging over the back fence, and linolium up against the side of the house and it is by a canal. I am getting tired of looking at houses and was hoping there was a web site I could go to that would provide that info.

LOL!! I just got off the phone with my realtor (I asked him to contact the listing agent) the listing agent hemmed and hawed, then said there might be a moisture or ground water problem. then my guy aksed why the linoleum and carpet was outside and the listing agent surprised sounding said he had no idea?? ha, ha... bet they get that flooring in the dumpster soon. thanks everyone for your time!

    Seller's disclosure would have that info. Talk to a realtor, they can get you that, many home sale sites offer sellers disclosures as well.

    If there is nothing about a flood in the disclosure but you do in fact know it was flooded, the sellers are facing trouble for lying on documents. But it also depends on what you mean by "flood", rain/river flood or a burst pipe. Either or need be disclosed, but obviously a burst water pipe (assuming it's been fixed) is not as likely to repeat itself as a weather related flood could..

    Good job focusing on that btw! A lot of people don't care about that, unfortunetly, cause they really should... Sure floods can happen absolutely anywhere, but history does tend to repeat...

    you may have to search the permits department on this. I live in Nashville and we just experienced a 1,000 year flood that had many homes not in FEMA flood plain actually under water. Then codes steps in and makes the owners and contractors pull new permits for the massive repairs needed to make the homes livable again. The current owner may not even know if the home ever flooded and would not be required to say that it has flooded.

    Depending on the severity a professional building inspector can make that determination.

    Garage converted to third bedroom? Make sure it was done with proper permits.

    an obvious one is ask people living nearby,

    if the house is insured ask the owner for a written record of any claims made for it from the insurance company
