Browning Hi Power safety?

I'm think of buying a nice looking Browning Hi Power 9mm pistol. Very nice condition Belgian gun. However, the gun's magazine safety has been removed. I believe the Mag. safety disconnects the trigger when the magazine is removed from the gun. The manual safety is there and functional. Does removing the mag. safety actually improve the trigger on the Hi Power? Is this something I can have replaced without costing me a bunch of cash? Thanks. . .

Removing the magazine disconnect safety on Browning Hi Powers will improve trigger pull.

The trigger pull on my first Hi Power wasn't as light as I desired even after a nice trigger job. I complained to the gunsmith and he worked on the gun again. The trigger did improve but I was still not satisfied. I was told if he lighten the trigger anymore, there is a high possibility that I will experience slam fires. If I like the trigger pull to improve, I must have the magazine disconnect (which was already polished) disabled. As soon as the magazine disconnect came off, I got a hair trigger (under 2.5 pounds) on my gun; I end up getting a new sear and another trigger job. LOL

All my later Hi Powers and clones except collectables, don't have the magazine disconnect safety and I don't have anything to complain about them. :)

The magazine disconnect was only placed there for political reasons; the French requested it specifically when they commissioned Browning to create the Hi-Power. I'd say a good 50% of Hi-Power owners remove it immediately as it greatly improves the feel of the trigger.

I supposed if you want it replaced you could...but why would you want to? The magazine disconnect is viewed as a liability in today's world and pretty much all police departments and militaries have moved away from them. The Hi-Power (AKA P35) was created in 1935...gunfighting dogma has changed a bit since then. The modern "if it can go wrong it will" idea says that the less disabling "safeties" a gun has the better...you wouldn't want your gun to be rendered inoperable should one of those safeties fail or be accidentally engaged.

    Browning Hi Power Trigger Job

I dont know why you'd go through the trouble of replacing a magazine disconnect. I;ve always felt they were pointless if you follow proper safe handling procedure.

High power's are great guns, but im not sure if the trigger is affected one way or the other. I would expect it would set you back at least $80, more if the parts are expensive.

Source(s): Added: lets say you are in a defensive gunfight. for one reason or another, the magazine drops out. you now have a club. At least without a disconnect, you have one round in the chamber that could be a lifesaver.

Contrary to an observation previously suggested, there actually is additional information.

Yes, removing the mag safety DOES decrease trigger creep, weight and pull, as there is one less spring to fight against, as well as the metal "crawling' as the safety plate scrapes up the magazine wall. The other advantage has already been described.

I'm no lawyer but.... I would think that if you sold the weapon after removing a manufacturer installed safety, and the buyer either had an accident or intentionally shot someone, you could be in for some heavy duty liability issues. You know how some lawyers and anti-gunners react.

Removing the magazine disconnect is actually an improvement to the original design it has no effect on trigger pull. Removing the magazine disconnect allows the pistol to fire with the magazine removed.

I agree with George. Guilty as charged. I'm trawling for points on this one. Magazine disconnect, humbug. Its a solution to a problem that never existed.

Source(s): Sorry George, the devil made me do it :) Ain't much trawling going on in the Gulf of Mexico, so may as well do it here.

TAHOEGUY covered the problem very thoroughly and quite correctly.

Anybody else posting on here is just trawling for points.

    'Nuff said.
