  • Ever see a Smith & Wesson p99 blow up?

Shocking, but saw the aftermath today. This is the S&W branded P99 made by walther. It was chambered in .40S&W, a factory WWB field load. The rear of the case blew out, resulting in the polymer frame blowing out on the right side. The chunk missing was about 1/4" top to bottom, from the rear of the trigger pin, back about 1.5 inches toward the rear of the grip. The shooter wasnt injured, and the gun is obviously toast. He claimed he was just shooting it as normal, and then POW! I've seen a few issues for cracked frames, but nothing this bad.... He's sending the gun and box end from the ammo back to S&W..... I was shocked at the extent of the damage.. the frame was missing at least on square inch of plastic, the gun was totally jammed and the case was stuck, partially pulled out of the chamber.

  • What defense loads do YOU carry in your short barrel 1911?

Just looking for input here. 3.5" ported barrel, im thinking of opting for a lighter 180ish grain load for higher velocity. I trust the Hornady Critical defense in everything else (PDX1 or Speer as a second choice) but cant find any .45ACP around town. Have seen & read what the 'experts' tested, just looking for ideas now...

  • Opinions on the Springfield Ultra Compact?

Hey everyone, glad to see most of the old crew is around! I am looking for opinions on the SA Ultra compact .45ACP. The model i am considering is a V10 ported model, about 90% condition. I can get it for a decent price from a reputable source, but cant shoot it first.... Anybody have or shoot one of these?

  • Teak Oil for a gun stock finish?

So i have been messing around with a winter time project, i am refinishing my POS Mosin 91/30. I dont expect a show quality item, and i know im simply polishing a turd. Its cheap entertainment until i can see the ground again.

My question: the stock is solid wood (no laminate) and i have already scraped, stripped, sanded and steel wooled the stock. Its actually not a bad looking piece of timber, considering. I have decided to go with a dark brown jacobean stain, and im not sure of what to use for a final finish. The wood appears to be some type of medium hardwood, its fairly close grained.

I want a matte or satin look, and have mixed advice on Tung, teak or polyurathane finishes. I dont really want to go for polyurethane, so that leaves Teak or Tung oil, unless somebody has a better idea.

  • What's everyone's favorite coyote/predator call?

I am leaning toward a Primos remote electronic call since it can be placed away from my cover. I have borad, open flat areas with low sagebrush. It provides little cover for 'yotes and me...

Also considering a cheapo injured rabbit call. Worth the money for an electronic one?

I also plan on using a lure and some nasty chicken bait. Its not my first rodeo, but most of the coyote hunting ive done is a fish in the barrel kind of thing. They are getting smarter now....

  • As i sit here watching COPS, i wonder...?

since Hi-point firearms represent such a small part of the overall gun market (guns sold annually), why is it that i have watched around 3 felons get arrested and they all were posessing Hi-Points illegally?

Is there a connection here? Hmmmm.

And to keep everyone happy, can i hunt moose with a Hi-point?

  • para 1911 malfunction?

During a brief shooting outing tonite, my buddy's Para 1911 jammed, and badly. Worse i've ever seen. The gun was cleared fortunately. the slide would not move one way or the other more then a few millimeters. Couldnt get the slide stop out either. The gun functioned flawlessly for two magazines, then had a failure to eject, (dropped the mag and cleared like a type three) and after that case was cleared, was locked up in battery.

He just had the ramp polished by a guy i consider to be a gunsmith of questionable skill. I am wondering what the issue could be, broken or otherwise screwed up link or link pin? Yes, we removed the barrel bushing and spring as well.... still nothing.

Any thoughts from you 1911 fans??

  • Anyone else waiting to get a rossi circuit judge in thier hands?

Well, i WAS. my local Scheel's had one one the rack, and it was a dissapointment of EPIC proportions. The wood is poory finished and dull, it has an awful Franken-grip thats miserable to hold, and the flanges that protect you from the cylinder gap are a screwed on add-on and dont even match the finish of the frame.

What a letdown! priced at $499, i wouldnt pay $200 for it....

What other guns have you anticipated getting you hands on and being sorely disappointed?

  • Shooters Choice vs tetra-lube?

Interesting actual serious question: i always used an recommended Shooters choice gun grease. Within about a month, i have TWO firearms that had been properly stored for about 6 months and the Shooters Choice dried out and turned gummy, messing up one revolver so bad i had to totally strip & clean it.

I was suggested Tetra-Lube, and am looking for some feedback. Please dont say "rem-oil", i already use that for its intended use.

  • So im looking at a new gun for Elk and Moose?

I was thinking maybe a .17HMR, but i want to be able to get 400+ yard shots with only A) Iron sights, or B) and EOtech holo sight. If i start handloading them, will i be able to get the power up there to Elk standards, or do i need to keep the crew manned full auto cane toad launcher? My crew is SOOO noisy and its costing me a fortune to feed them. Not to mention that all the dang croaking is scaring the game off.

  • Why is it that most Anti-gun folks have never fired a gun?

I mean really, whats the deal? How can someone be so jaded that they devolp a hatred of an inatimate object? For example, my 'assault rifle' never assaulted ANYBODY.

I personally belive that responsible gun ownership is simply a statement that says: "I believe my life and the lives of my family are more important than the Meth addicted gang member ex-felon breaking down my door at 2AM."

  • Whats the longest shot you have made with only iron sights?

Talking rifles mostly, also what type of gun and what caliber.

I managed to ring a 18" steel target at 318 yards today with a Taurus pump action .357 carbine (thunderbolt) with a 22" barrel. Took four shots, then it kept ringing for the last 5. Also hit it with a Marlin 1895 .45-70 in four shots with the Hornady leverEvolution rounds. Rang it, then realized that each one of those misses was costing me $1.25....

  • Can i take my mentally challenged friend shooting with a Hi-Point?

Or would a Sigma or Lorcin or Bryco be better? PLEEEAZE help. Also, are plastic BB's edible? What are the copper ones made from and can i get lead poisoning from them? I am very concerned. Also, my other freind told me that if i want to go hunting, i can bribe a ranger to poach a deer in exchange for certain favors. Is this true, and last, how do i change my barrel oil. Its been in there a long time and must be getting gummy.

  • Have you ever gone camping?

and run into someone who must ben an answerer in the hunting section here? this guy (who was the boyfriend of one of my freinds) INSISTED that he & his brother are huge hunters and they shoot black bear with an SKS, and have taken at least 15 in the past 7 years in california, including one that was 300 yards up a tree and weighed 800 lbs (california black bear record weight was under 700 lbs, back in the 1930's). BTW, these were all shot right behind the ear. My buddy, and his lifelong friend are all avid experianced hunters, and just kept looking at each other and tried not to laugh. The best part is the dude KNOWS that we are avid experianced hunters...

SO, in a situation like this, in mixed company with about 15 people (including a few kids) around a campfire, how do you deal with someone who is so obviously full of feces that its dribbling out of his ears onto his shoulders?
