Ever see a Smith & Wesson p99 blow up?

Question

Shocking, but saw the aftermath today. This is the S&W branded P99 made by walther. It was chambered in .40S&W, a factory WWB field load. The rear of the case blew out, resulting in the polymer frame blowing out on the right side. The chunk missing was about 1/4" top to bottom, from the rear of the trigger pin, back about 1.5 inches toward the rear of the grip. The shooter wasnt injured, and the gun is obviously toast. He claimed he was just shooting it as normal, and then POW! I've seen a few issues for cracked frames, but nothing this bad.... He's sending the gun and box end from the ammo back to S&W..... I was shocked at the extent of the damage.. the frame was missing at least on square inch of plastic, the gun was totally jammed and the case was stuck, partially pulled out of the chamber.

I mean, you hear the stories of 'this glock blew up" this HI-point blew up", etc. I never expected it from a walther. i am really wondering if it was a hot load. The gun appeared well taken care of, not beat up at all.

No I haven’t but I also think it may have been a hot load. But then they have had issues with those Tupperware guns. Sorry I’m not a plastic fan, although I have seen them perform quite well esp in sub zero temperatures where a steel frame would tend to freeze up.
But then I have seen magnum revolvers blow up. And I had a cheap RG .38 special blow out the cylinder when I shot it. And that turned out to be a hot handload ‘prank’ some idiots pulled on me.

I'm sure it wasn't pretty but it sounds like it was purely caused by bad ammo. I used to swear by Winchester ammo but I have been having issues with some Winchester rounds too. High priced high velocity 22LR ammo with 10 duds per 50 while 50 federals all went off in the same gun on the same trip. Either they are cutting corners or we are feeling the backlash of 24/7 production.

Hello stranger, long time no see!  I've never heard of a Walther doing that and I know a few guys that have them.  If that wasn't an extremely hot load it makes you wonder a little bit about what S&W is doing in their QC department.  Glad the shooter was OK.

Polymer frames and parts just aren't as strong as their steel counterparts.  So, if you fire a defectively over-powered round it really could blow a chunk out of the frame where it would have most likely warped a steel frame pistol.  Firing a cartridge is basically causing a controlled explosion after all.

I've never seen it happen personally, but it doesn't surpise me.
