Magnolia tree problems drops too many leaves?
I move into my house 2 years ago, we have a beautiful Magnolia tree, I try to keep it trimmed but my problem is, it drops leaves all year around. it is surrounded by a brick garden that was planted by the previous owners and it is quite tall, taller then my 2 story house ( i am trying to give you an accurate description) is it supposed to drop leaves daily? I got all the leaves up last night and this morning it covered most of the yard
I am pricing companies that will cut down and haul the tree away but I want a 2nd opinion, if there is a way to stop so many leaves from falling I will do what it takes.
Some thoughts are good, others are just plain lame...
that being said, due to my failing health if I can not get the falling leaves to slow down I will have to remove it.

Is it the Bull Magnolia that your talking about? The one with tough shiny dark green leaves?
I cared for a Body Corporate garden here in Melbourne, Australia for about 8 years and it had quite a large one growing at the entrance.
I loved the white flowers but the leaf clean up was continuous. It' just one of those trees - like eucalyptus, they drop leaves nearly all year round in abundance. Dry weather will encourage it but I think its the nature of the tree.
One of the reasons I prefer deciduous trees as they generally have only a once a year clean up.

Yes, my neighbor also has a huge magnolia tree, It is gorgeous.
I think this is a small price to pay for beauty and chracter. I agree with not raking it. What is the obsession with clean yards anyway? Once a week of raking is good exercise.. It can be a weekend job for a a boy in your neighborhood.
My sister had three ancient walnut trees in her yard and the mess those trees made was a daily job. Yet she never complained and just sold the house eventually and moved away. I missed those trees. The next owner chopped them down (horrible man).and replaced them with puny decorative shrubbery.
I still remember the sound of crunching leaves with the noises made by chattering chipmunks and squirrels all involved in their daily sociallives among the trees, I step on twigs and they stop- I see red cardinals and blue birds. Those memories are etched in my mind.

Don't cut it down, they are really beautiful. Also if it is that old it is a huge part of the character of your property. Drawback is yes they make a mess. Try not to let it drive you nuts. Rake once a week.
