Muslims, which way do you face to pray if you are at the Antipode of Mecca?

At the Antipode any direction you face will be the same distance to Mecca.

Perhaps face directly into the ground?

Geometrically speaking, for someone to pray direclty towards Mecca, they would have to be facing the ground somewhat, unless they are reasonably close to Mecca (say, on the Arabian penninsula). Otherwise they are facing to the horizon and into space beyond that. The further away from Mecca they are, the more they should be praying towards the ground to ensure their prayers actually get to Mecca instead of floating off into space.

If you're interested, the antipode is located in the South Pacific not far from Atoll Tematangi.

You gave the answer to your question. You are free to face Mecca from any direction.

well, considering that it's probably somewhere in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, we'll never know.

By my estimation, the closest country to Mecca's antipode would be Chile, and you'd need a boat to get that far east.

It's not the distance that matters, it's the FOCAL POINT to Mecca that matters. Nor are the objects in the way a problem.

You can face Mecca no matter where you are in the world, so there is no problem of facing Mecca.

Facing towards the direction of Mecca ITSELF is what matters.

    where is that geographically?

Anyway, at any city, the following site will give you the qibla (direction to face).

    www.islamicfinder.org

Also, in case you wanted to know, if a Muslim does not know the qibla, then they can pray in any direction after they have tried to find out. Also, if they are in a vehicle, they can pray riding the vehicle even if the vehicle does not face the qibla.

    hope that helped!

In Mecca it is appropriate to face the most holy shrine, where the sacred stone is kept.

in that case, they could take one step in any direction and then know which way to pray.

a more pressing concern would be...why am i in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and how do i avoid drowning?
