It was a religious/spiritual ending. It really depends on your spiritual background and beliefs. The writers were able to create an ending that could be take differently depending on each persons beliefs. It comes down to what you believe happens to the soul after death. Whatever you believe in, thats what was happening. That would also determine why people didn't realize they were dead. Again, it just depends on your spiritual beliefs to determine what it meant. It was actually a very impressive thing that they did. They created a finale that different people took to mean different things, and nobody was right or wrong.
